Position SummaryThe Metropolitan Council's Environmental Services (MCES) Division has three (3) vacancies for apprentice electricians (long-term temporary; up to two years). This position will require travel between various MCES facilities within the Twin Cities metro area.
About MCESMetropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) is an operating division of the Metropolitan Council. MCES operates and maintains the wastewater collection and treatment system for the Minneapolis-St. Paul seven-county metropolitan area, which includes approximately 600 miles of regional sanitary sewers and eight regional wastewater treatment plants. MCES treats an average of 250 million gallons of wastewater daily, providing cost-effective service to more than 2.6 million people in 109 customer communities.
MCES treatment plants consistently earn state and national awards for complete compliance with their environmental permits. MCES is also nationally renowned for its superior work in monitoring air and water quality and planning for a long-range water supply to meet future demand.

Responsibilities- Perform electrical work related to the system process.
- Maintain personnel protection system for fire, hydrogen sulfide, and hydrocarbon alarm systems.
- Perform electrical construction work. Verify proper operation with collection/plant system processes.
- Troubleshoot and repair various electrical/electronic equipment, including PLC, VFD, MCC, telemetry, and SCADA systems.
- Perform calibration and verification on various process instrumentation, metering and recording devices (pressure, level, flow, weight, etc.).
- Check and maintain emergency service equipment.
- Complete job reports on labor and material.
- Work with maintenance management systems (WAM), process control systems (Cimplicity/Wonderware), and other computer system software programs.
- Maintain monitoring systems at lift stations, meter sites, river quality monitoring, regulators, and rain gauge sites.
- Diagnose and repair integration devices between field devices and process computers.
- Provide welding to support the electrical group.
- Test, install, and repair sacrificial and rectifier-type cathodic protection systems.
- Perform other related duties.
- Currently registered in a registered indentured apprenticeship electrical program through the State of Minnesota, AND two (2) years of work experience in the electrical field installing conduit, wiring, and electrical equipment in commercial and industrial locations.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Completion of a two-year vocational/technical program in construction and electricity.
- Ability and/or experience working with people from diverse cultural and or racial backgrounds.
- Work experience in a wastewater treatment/collection system facility or other industrial setting.
- Knowledge of and experience in all aspects of assembling, installing, maintaining, and testing electrical equipment and wiring systems in an industrial setting.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Requires the skill to provide basic client services to the public and other agencies within the organization. Requires tact, courtesy, and cooperation in dealings with others where the primary purpose is the exchange of information.
- Ability to work with other traders and crafts as a member of a composite crew.

Working EnvironmentAbility to work in all outdoor weather conditions. Ability to work in wastewater treatment plant facilities and collection sites, including underground lift stations, meter vaults, sewers, and control vaults. This position requires extensive travel within the seven-county metro area and driving between work sites.
