Vehicle Mechanic - Transportation - TEST

General Information

Performs skilled mechanical and technical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, service, and preventive maintenance of District fleet vehicles and specialized equipment. Maintains gasoline- and diesel-powered engines and related mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic systems. Uses diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, and computerized work-order systems to identify and resolve equipment problems and ensure vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable requirements.

Reports to the Director of Transportation or the Maintenance Supervisor or Distribution Manager (depending on the area in which this position is assigned.

• Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, services, and maintains District vehicles, specialized equipment, small engines, and related accessories.
• Diagnoses and repairs gasoline- and diesel-powered internal combustion engines and associated mechanical systems and components.
• Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains complex electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
• Uses appropriate diagnostic equipment, testing procedures, service information, and technical manuals to identify equipment problems and determine appropriate repairs.
• Performs road tests and operational testing following repairs and maintenance to verify proper performance, safety, and reliability.
• Performs welding, cutting, fabrication, and related metal repair using acetylene, arc-welding, and other approved equipment and techniques.
• Removes, repairs, replaces, adjusts, and installs vehicle and equipment components and accessories in accordance with manufacturer specifications and established maintenance practices.
• Determines when repairs require specialized services or parts and coordinates work with approved third-party vendors when authorized.

• Develops and follows preventive maintenance schedules for assigned vehicles and equipment to promote safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation.
• Conducts inspections and routine maintenance in accordance with established schedules, manufacturer recommendations, applicable regulations, and District requirements.
• Inspects new vehicles and equipment upon receipt to verify condition, specifications, components, and features comply with purchase or contract requirements.
• Inspects vehicles and equipment to identify safety concerns, defects, required repairs, and maintenance needs.
• Verifies completed repairs and maintained equipment meet applicable safety, operational, and regulatory requirements before returning them to service.
• Maintains accurate maintenance and repair records, including documentation of inspections, diagnoses, repairs, parts, services, and preventive maintenance activities.

• Identifies and obtains parts, materials, supplies, and specialized services necessary to complete assigned repairs and maintenance in accordance with District purchasing procedures.
• Monitors assigned parts, materials, and supply inventories and identifies replenishment needs.
• Enters, updates, and closes work orders and maintenance records in the District's computerized corrective and preventive maintenance system.
• Maintains and organizes current service, repair, maintenance, and technical manuals and reference materials for District vehicles and equipment.

• Communicates effectively with supervisors, coworkers, drivers, equipment operators, vendors, and other District personnel regarding equipment conditions, repair needs, service status, and recommended corrective actions.
