About us

Esperanza United mobilizes Latinas and Latine communities to end domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. Formerly Casa de Esperanza, Esperanza United was founded in 1982 by a small group of persevering Latinas as an emergency shelter in St. Paul, Minnesota. We continue to ground our work in community strengths and wisdom, as we serve Latines locally and nationwide.

Position Overview

As the Family Advocate–Dakota County, you will help survivors of domestic violence and their children pursue safety, stability, and lives free from violence. Through the Expanding Legal Services Initiative (ELSI), you will provide trauma-informed advocacy, connect participants with legal and community resources, and coordinate closely with the ELSI Attorney, Legal Coordinator, Family Advocacy team, and community partners.

This role works primarily Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend commitments for special projects. You will work throughout Dakota County and the Twin Cities metro area to expand awareness of and access to legal and advocacy services.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide bilingual, trauma-informed advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, and resource navigation for survivors and their children.
  • Participate in the shift rotation coverage of the organization’s 24 hour bilingual crisis line and respond to urgent need Screen and refer participants to ELSI, support intake completion, and coordinate services with legal and advocacy colleagues.
  • Help participants access protective orders, public benefits, health care, housing, legal representation, and other essential resources.
  • Prepare for and accompany participants to appointments and court appearances, and advocate with service providers and systems when needed.
  • Build relationships with community organizations, service providers, and government partners, primarily in Dakota County.
  • Share information and provide training on ELSI services, domestic violence, and Latine community realities.
  • Maintain timely records, complete required reporting and administrative tasks, and contribute to program learning and improvement.
What You’ll Bring
  • A high school diploma or GED and at least two years of experience in an intervention setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills in both Spanish and English.
  • Knowledge of Latine communities in Dakota County and the Twin Cities metro area, with the cultural responsiveness to work effectively with individuals and families.
  • Knowledge of domestic violence issues is preferred.
  • Ability to listen, de-escalate conflict, respond to crises, and make sound decisions independently.
  • Strong organization and time-management skills, including the ability to manage competing calls, requests, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Comfort using computers and technology for communication, documentation, and daily work.
  • A collaborative, mission-focused approach and commitment to a positive workplace grounded in Latine cultural strengths, interdependence, and communalism.
  • A valid driver’s license, adequate vehicle insurance, and reliable transportation for participant support and regular travel throughout Dakota County and the metro area.
