Work you’ll doThe Transportation Associate and Transportation Generalist support the maintenance and repair of highways, snow removal, and roadway safety. Work is seasonal: in summer the focus is on road surface and roadside maintenance; in winter the focus is on snow & ice control.
- Summer:
Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance- Maintain and reconstruct roadways, right‑of‑ways, shoulder surfaces; maintain traffic barriers; participate in bituminous repair, culvert cleaning, guardrail repair; install catch basins; perform drainage and shoulder repair.
- Perform preventive maintenance on highway equipment; operate tractor mowers and small rollers to maintain roadways.
- Set up traffic control in high‑volume areas in accordance with Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual to ensure safety of employees and the traveling public.
- Perform landscaping duties including tree, grass, shrub, brush maintenance and removal; chip tree limbs and remove stumps.
- Winter:
Snow & Ice- Remove snow from roadways and shoulders, widen roads, apply anti‑icing and de‑icing chemicals, remove frozen ice from culverts; conduct night or dawn patrols.
- Maintain and inspect winter equipment; clean equipment post‑storm.
- Perform pre‑season route inspection and post‑storm cleanup, including sweep bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, medians, ramps.
- Document snow and ice data for inventory and resource management reporting.
Full‑time, year‑round seasonal schedule. Summer:
Monday‑Thursday 6:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (4‑10 hrs). Winter:
Monday‑Friday 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Hours may include overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays as required by weather and maintenance conditions.
- Exam Part 1: One year experience performing snow/ice, soil, road surface, roadside, bridge, sign maintenance, commercial vehicle operation, heavy equipment operation, or farm work; or a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (60 semester/90 quarter credits) with transcript submission.
- License:
Valid MN Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tanker endorsement, no air‑brake restriction; ability to upgrade to Class A within 30 days. - Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public; maintain routine logs and simple records.
- License:

- Previous MnDOT experience as a Laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.
Work nights and outdoors in hot and cold weather; drive on and off‑road conditions; operate machinery and equipment; move 50–70 pounds occasionally; wear and use personal protective equipment.
