JOB TITLE: Special Education Paraprofessional

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

FLSA: Non-Exempt

POSITION PURPOSE / SUMMARY

Special Education Paraprofessionals equip students with disabilities to excel in their educational journey by providing support to help them achieve individually identified goals.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent is required. Experience working with children is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who have a minimum of sixty (60) college hours and can obtain a substitute teacher certification and be competent in the duties to be performed. Experience working with students with disabilities, behavioral needs, or in educational settings is strongly preferred.

Candidates must demonstrate flexibility, reliability, and a commitment to supporting diverse learners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist the special education teacher or general education teacher with instruction of special education students in the classroom.
  • Meet the needs of all students with disabilities on campus under direction of school administration and special education teams.
  • Monitor and assist students in multiple classroom environments to complete tasks, stay focused, and provide accommodations per the Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Assist with the physical care of special education students as needed (diaper changing, taking to bathroom, feeding).
  • Assist in teaching and modeling positive behaviors.
  • Assist students in daily living skills such as feeding, toileting, and mobility.
  • Provide support in monitoring, intervening, and redirecting student behaviors; act to prevent and de‑escalate behavior.
  • Monitor classroom when teacher unavailable due to other responsibilities.
  • Assist students with use of assistive technology.
  • Assist in data collection related to IEP goals.
  • Lead individual and small group activities with students under teacher direction.
  • Facilitate communication between general education and special education teachers.
  • Escort students to and from classes, activities, and transportation buses as needed.
  • Maintain documentation and records for student files; maintain and update computer files.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Assist in lunchroom as assigned.
  • Assist at recess as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by building principal.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in written form with administrators, staff, and community as needed.
MENTAL DEMANDS

Ability to maintain highly confidential information; communicate clearly both orally and in writing; make decisions in high‑stress situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Concentrate in an environment with multiple conversations and activities. Good vision and hearing. Frequently lift over 20 lbs, occasionally lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs. Reach, stand, walk, climb, sit, grasp, repeat movements.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employment at will for 9 months beginning with first day of work calendar or time of employment, duration of school year, prorated personal leave. Each paraprofessional is provided a work calendar with daily schedule which may be modified by Board. Seven hours (including a 30‑minute non‑paid lunch) constitute a workday. Schedule approved by principal and superintendent. Salary disbursed in nineteen (19) or twenty‑four (24) equal payments per employee’s choice.

EVALUATION

End‑of‑year performance evaluations continue annually per Board policy.
