Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Reviews building plans, drawings, specifications and calculations for accuracy and completeness; examines individual components to ensure all code‑mandated items have been included.
  • Conducts preliminary conferences with project architects and engineers to identify potential problems.
  • Makes recommendations regarding updates to current building codes.
  • Calculates footage to ensure compliance with code; indicates and makes recommendations for revisions to bring plans into compliance.
  • Inspects building sites to ensure plans are followed; conducts field inspections for structural integrity and safety of buildings after a catastrophic event.
  • Participates in client meetings related to plan examination of current and proposed projects.
  • Provides technical assistance to other City agencies or departments regarding building code matters.

  • Data Utilization:
    Requires the ability to perform mid‑level data analysis, including the ability to audit, deduce, assess, conclude and appraise, with discretion in determining and referencing such to established criteria to define consequences and develop alternatives.
  • Human Interaction:
    Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as coworkers and the public, on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations. Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
    Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as a personal computer, motor vehicle and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference, descriptive and advisory data and information such as construction documents, estimates, structural calculations, specifications, codes and standards, and non‑routine correspondence.
  • Mathematical Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages, and decimals; requires the ability to perform basic to advanced algebraic, geometric and trigonometric operations.
  • Functional Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems, interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form, and exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
  • Situational Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Environmental Factors:
    Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards or irate individuals.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Requires the ability to lift, carry, push and pull moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty (20) to fifty (50) pounds, such as lifting project specifications; involves regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping and kneeling to perform building inspections.
  • Sensory Requirements:
    Requires the ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and textures associated with job‑related objects, materials and tasks, such as review of construction documents.
Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Community Development, or a related field that includes coursework in historic preservation and urban design OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis.
