Lead Firearms Instructors (LFIs) are the first point of contact for Federal Flight Deck Officers when they arrive at the training venue; they check in, verify weapons and credentials, conduct training, and oversee the course of fire at the gun-range. They ensure safety of all personnel and secure SSI and SPII information during and after requalification sessions.
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct all classroom instruction, delivering approved TSA training and safety brief, introducing new equipment, ensuring students sign safety briefing.
- Maintain instructor/student ratio of 1:6 by ensuring a sufficient number of SFIs are present.
- Verify weapons and credentials of FFDOs before training by visual inspection.
- Ensure proper scoring of targets, complete administrative forms, and collect training data.
- Sign and certify qualification scores for all qualifying FFDOs.
- Handle unloaded weapons, transport devices, credentials and other equipment according to TSA/FAMS procedures.
- Secure SSI and SPII during sessions, complying with TSA MD 2100.2 and MT 1400.3 policies.
- Oversee time keeping of all SFI labor hours.
- Participate in internal compliance training events.
What you’ll need to succeed:
- Current or former federal law enforcement, officer, or civilian employee who has completed a recognized federal firearms instructor training program acceptable to TSA/FAMS (e.g., FLETC FITP, FAMS FITP, FBI/DEA FITP).
- Successful completion of a 2‑3 day firearms re‑qualification training program under the direction of the SAC, FAMS Training Division, and FFDO Program Office.
- At least 5 years of firearms training experience.
- Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education, technical certifications, or work/military experience.
- Ability to work at indoor/outdoor gun ranges, wearing hearing protection and performing required physical tasks.
- Pass a background investigation clearance prior to starting.

The likely hourly rate for this position is between $30.44 – $41.18; actual compensation will be determined by experience, location, and contract requirements.
