What You Will Do as a Staff Accountant
  • Manage recurring bookkeeping and accounting responsibilities for an assigned portfolio of clients
  • Enter, categorize, and review bank, credit card, payroll, loan, and other financial transactions as needed
  • Prepare journal entries and record appropriate adjustments to client accounts
  • Reconcile and review bank, credit card, loan, payroll, and balance sheet accounts
  • Review work completed by Junior Accountants and provide clear, constructive feedback
  • Review general ledgers and financial statements for unusual balances, classification issues, incomplete transactions, reconciliation differences, and missing documentation
  • Prepare and review monthly and periodic financial reports
  • Identify accounting issues, research potential solutions, and make appropriate corrections
  • Prepare clear review notes and prepare and review federal and state payroll tax returns, including Forms 941, 940, and applicable state filings
  • Prepare and review year-end payroll reporting, including Forms W-2 and W-3
  • Prepare and review state and local sales tax returns
  • Reconcile taxable sales, sales tax collected, sales tax payable, and amounts reported
  • Assist with sales tax and payroll account registrations and related compliance matters
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and organized work papers and supporting documentation
  • Manage recurring accounting and filing deadlines across assigned clients
  • Communicate directly with clients to request information, resolve outstanding items, answer routine questions, and provide progress updates
  • Proactively identify potential accounting, payroll, sales tax, or process concerns
  • Support the training and development of Junior Accountants
  • Follow and reinforce SMG's accounting, documentation, and client-service standards
  • Assist managers with special projects and other client-service responsibilities as needed
Qualifications and attributes you will need
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA license is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of accounting/bookkeeping experience, with proficiency in Quick Books.
  • Solid understanding of journal entries, debits, and credits, demonstrating a strong foundation in accounting principles
  • Detail-oriented and deadline-driven, with the ability to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of identifying and resolving financial discrepancies
  • Exceptional client service skills, providing proactive support and building strong relationships with clients
  • Goal-oriented and purpose-driven mindset, consistently striving for excellence in all aspects of work
  • Versatile and adaptable, capable of handling a variety of accounting tasks and adjusting to changing priorities
