Position Summary

Overview: The Nurse Resident, Acute Care supports patient care on the Neuro Med/Surg floor, the area’s only Level IV Epilepsy Center. It is a fast-paced, clinically intense unit that cares for brain-related conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s, MS, epilepsy, head injuries, and cognitive disorders.

Job Summary: The Nurse Resident administers patient care in an area within a hospital or inpatient/observation setting, where acute care patients receive active treatment for injuries, illnesses, medical conditions, or post-intervention with assessment. This position is on the Neuro Med/Surg floor, the area’s only Level IV Epilepsy Center. It is a fast-paced, clinically intense unit that specializes in the care of brain conditions including stroke, Parkinson’s, MS, epilepsy, head injuries, and cognitive disorders.

Please note: This position is intended for licensed registered nurses with less than one year of experience. Applicants must hold an active Florida or compact multistate RN license to be considered.

About the residency program: The Orlando Health Registered Nurse Residency Program is accredited by the ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP). The Nurse Residency is a 12-month, ANCC-accredited program that supports RNs with under one year of experience through structured training, preceptorship, monthly classes, and simulation to transition into independent practice.

It is a 480-bed teaching medical center with recognized care across emergency medicine, cardiology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, women’s services, and advanced surgical specialties. The hospital’s Level II Trauma Center is the only adult trauma center in Pinellas County and, in partnership with Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, is one of Florida’s 13 state-certified Level III Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Administers bedside patient care in a hospital or inpatient/observation setting under the supervision of a preceptor, leader, and/or charge nurse.
  • Assesses patients’ needs and develops/revises individualized plans of care based on their needs and responses. Evaluates patients’ progress toward attaining expected outcomes.
  • Respects diversity by building respectful relationships with all team members and customers.
  • Functions as an advocate for patients and their families.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit/department.
  • Serves as a preceptor, charge nurse, unit educator, and/or nurse clinician.
  • Communicates and collaborates with medical staff and the interdisciplinary team to effectively plan and manage the unit/department.
  • Serves as a role model for staff and supports the hospital and nursing department’s goals and strategies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, assesses data reflective of the patient’s status, and interprets the necessary information to identify each patient’s age-specific needs.
  • Coordinates patient care for a defined group and delegates tasks appropriately to team members.
  • Documents patient care in a knowledgeable, skillful, and consistent manner, meeting all required and regulatory standards, including patient assessment, education, medication administration, treatments, and patient safety.
  • Demonstrates competency in nursing skills and the use of patient care/unit equipment as defined by unit/department-specific requisite skills.
  • Prioritizes patient care in an ongoing manner in accordance with Evidence-Based Practice Standards of Care.
