Cherokee Federal is seeking a Researcher II in St. Petersburg, Florida. This position supports coastal and marine science research through laboratory analysis, geological sample curation, data processing, GIS database management, scientific documentation, and preparation of data products and reports.

Research II

Responsibilities Include:

• Perform sediment core analysis activities, including core splitting, logging, interpretation, sampling, photographing, and documentation.
• Process sediment samples using established laboratory procedures, including sample splitting, dehydration, sieving, grain-size analysis, and related analytical methods.
• Support analysis and curation of geological, reef-core, and sediment-core samples, including physical sample management and associated metadata.
• Catalog geological samples and enter complete, accurate information into scientific databases, core repositories, and other approved data-management systems.
• Process radiochemistry data from instruments and methods such as RAD7 and high-purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometry, under the direction of staff.
• Digitize and assist with interpretation of sub-seafloor seismic profiles and other marine geophysical data products.
• Update, maintain, and manage Geographic Information System (GIS) databases and associated geospatial datasets.
• Generate shape files, digitized traces, graphs, spreadsheets, and other data products that support scientific research and reporting.
• Use Esri ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office applications, and other approved Windows-based tools to collect, organize, manage, and document laboratory and research data.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and support proper laboratory organization, sample handling, and equipment-use practices.
• Conduct data quality assurance and quality control activities, including data review, validation, documentation, and correction of identified errors.
• Prepare and maintain processing logs, laboratory records, method documentation, metadata, and other supporting records in accordance with standard operating procedures and project requirements.
• Assist with data summaries, statistical analyses, scientific figures, maps, visualizations, and descriptions for scientific databases, reports, and related products.
• Write or assist with writing laboratory documents, technical reports, data reports, publication materials, and other formal scientific documentation.
• Provide timely data entry, analysis summaries, quality-control documentation, and completed task products according to established schedules.
• Participate in weekly briefings and provide updates on task progress, data-processing status, and deliverables.
• Work under the supervision of staff when tasks require scientific interpretation, complex geophysical analysis, or production-quality publication writing.
• Follow established standard operating procedures, sampling protocols, analytical protocols, information-security requirements, property-protection requirements, and facility-security requirements.
• Safeguard Government-furnished property and secure Government facilities, equipment, samples, and materials as required.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Experience, Education, Skills, and Abilities Requested:

• Bachelor's degree in geology, marine science, environmental science, or a closely related discipline required.
• One to three years of relevant laboratory, field, research, environmental, geological, marine science, or data-management experience required.
• Knowledge of sediment and core-processing techniques, including grain-size analysis, loss-on-ignition (LOI), and related laboratory methods.
• Familiarity with geological sample handling, sediment sample curation, laboratory documentation, and metadata practices.
• Knowledge of Esri ArcGIS software and GIS data-management concepts.
