Police Communications Specialist (Dispatcher)

Position Summary

The Police Communications Specialist is a highly technical position that is responsible for operating a USF Police Department emergency communications center on a 24‑hour basis. This position receives incoming calls for police and security services, dispatches officers as appropriate, and monitors police radio and alarms.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Monitors and responds to 911 calls within a USF Police Department emergency communications center location ersburg campus.
  • Responsible for dispatching officers in an efficient manner to emergency and service calls.
  • Operates various technical products including, but not limited to, Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management software, public safety camera monitoring, campus wide emergency notification systems, remote facility access software, and various administrative computer software products in support of campus safety and operations.
  • Coordinates non‑university emergency response services with municipal, county, or state Police and Fire Departments.
  • Monitors the field position and activities of Law Enforcement Officers, and non‑sworn officers.
  • Transmits requests for emergency services and retrieves various data and records.
  • Checks driver's license records, vehicle registrations, stolen article files, warrants, criminal histories, and missing person lists.
  • Monitors fire and burglar alarms and alarm systems for all university buildings.
  • Provides information/assistance to members of the public who visit the University Police Department.
  • Prepares various logs, reports and forms.
  • Supports other emergency response and administrative duties as needed or required.
Qualifications

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and one year of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Proficiency in typing, ability to obtain State certification on the NCIC/FCIC computer system, and Florida 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Certificate.

The ability to work alternating shifts, dayshift, night shift, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous communications experience in a police department environment.
  • Florida 911 (PST) Public Safety Telecommunicator Certificate
Information for Applicants

This position requires a current/Valid Florida 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Certificate or the ability to obtain one within six months of hiring. A drug screening and background investigation will be required, this includes fingerprinting through the FBI.

This position is subject to a Level #2 criminal background check.
