School Resource Officer (SRO)

Job Type: Full-Time, 190 days
Reports to:
School District Administration & Local Law Enforcement Agency
Salem Community Schools is seeking a dedicated and compassionate School Resource Officer (SRO) to ensure the safety and security of our students, staff, and school premises. The ideal candidate will not only focus on maintaining a safe school environment but will also serve as an educator and role model, helping students make informed decisions about important issues such as bullying, online safety, substance abuse, and other critical safety matters.
Key Responsibilities- Safety and Security
- Maintain a visible presence on school campuses to deter and respond to safety threats.
- Collaborate with school staff to develop and implement safety plans, emergency response protocols, and safety drills.
- Investigate and respond to incidents involving students, staff, or facilities to ensure a safe learning environment.
- Student Education and Outreach
- Develop and deliver educational programs on topics such as bullying prevention, online safety, drug education, vaping awareness, and other relevant issues.
- Provide classroom presentations and engage in discussions with students about making responsible choices and the consequences of unsafe behaviors.
- Serve as a resource for students needing advice or guidance on personal safety, peer conflicts, or law-related concerns.
- Building Positive Relationships
- Build strong relationships with students, staff, and parents to foster trust and open communication.
- Act as a positive role model by promoting respect for authority, responsibility, and community involvement.
- Support a positive school climate by encouraging respectful interactions and conflict resolution.
- Collaboration with School Staff and Law Enforcement
- Work closely with school administration, teachers, counselors, and law enforcement to address student behavioral issues and create individualized support plans where needed.
- Participate in school safety committees and meetings to assess and improve school security measures.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and local law enforcement agencies, ensuring consistent communication on any issues affecting student or school safety.
- Certified law enforcement officer in the state of Indiana, or the ability to obtain certification.
- Experience working with youth or in an educational setting preferred.
- Strong knowledge of safety protocols, emergency response, and law enforcement procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with students and staff.
- Ability to present to large groups of students and lead educational programs.
- Ability to connect with students of all ages as well as staff.
- Commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.
- Training in bullying prevention, drug education, or digital safety programs.
- Experience working with diverse populations of students, including those with special needs.
- Crisis intervention training or experience in de-escalation techniques.
Salary:
Competitive, based on experience and qualifications.
