Position Title: Visitor Services Specialist – Museum Operations Date: February, 2026

Reports to: Visitor Services Manager FLSA: NONEXEMPT

Position Overview

Reporting to the Visitor Services Manager, the Visitor Service Specialist – Museum Operations is responsible for providing a welcoming, engaging, friendly, educational and safe experience for all visitors. This role is responsible for assisting with proper staffing, training, and coaching, groups sales requests, execution of daily operations, and managing resources to encourage diverse visitation and offer our visitors an accessible, unforgettable, and informative cultural experience.

This position has two major fields of concentration:
Visitor Services Operations and Visitor Service. These two areas complement each other by providing the guest with easy access to The Gables’ experiences and helping to provide the experience itself.

Visitor Services Operations Support
  • Manage response to initial group sales inquiries. Accurately create and update reservations and produce relevant internal communications.
  • Assist with hiring and training of new associates May through September; help evaluate training for improvement Manage response to initial group sales inquiry.
  • Maintain stock of Visitor Services printed collateral; manage the payment and develop budgetary needs associated with production. Ensure internal communication materials are up to date.
  • Daily response to messages received through the general information email account and online reviews.
  • Weekly emails to recent visitors to maintain engagement and encourage membership and donations. Work with Development and Director of Visitor Services and Public Programs on email content.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including committee participation and assisting other departments with projects or tasks.
Visitor Services
  • Serve in visitor-facing role at admissions, the store and interpreter at least 2 times per week.
  • Serve as Manager on Duty (MOD) at least 1 time per week, responding to guest, tech, or staff issues as needed.
  • Answer visitors’ questions regarding the historic site, Salem and surrounding area, and other attractions in town in a positive and hospitable manner.
  • Help the organization achieve its strategic objective to promote repeat visitation by sharing upcoming programs and events, and encourage visitors to support the organization through membership by mentioning the benefits.
Preparation, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook required. Proficiency with Blackbaud Altru acquired through on-the-job training required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication, customer service and organizational skills.
  • Must be visitor focused with the ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public and other staff members, including in a coaching manner.
  • Must be able to work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, with occasional evenings and flex days due to programming and October visitation volume.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
  • Constant use of speech, hearing and sight abilities.
  • Frequent use of telephone and computer.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in most weather conditions.
  • Must be able to walk, climb stairs (including the secret stairway) and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to have continuous dialog for long periods of time and be comfortable with public speaking.
  • Must be comfortable in small, crowded spaces.
  • May need to kneel, bend, crouch, reach or stretch, and lift up to 30 lbs to perform daily tasks.
Compensation

$45-47,000, commensurate with experience
