This role focuses on providing direct language instruction to multilingual learners to increase English proficiency, academic language acquisition, and overall student achievement.
Role Responsibilities- Teaches English language development pull‑out classes to multilingual students of all proficiency levels aligned to WIDA Can‑Do Descriptors and Common Core Standards, providing rigorous opportunities for critical thinking and language learning.
- Pushes into and co‑teaches general ed Humanities, math, or science classes daily.
- Leverages extensive knowledge of first and second language acquisition in planning and collaborating with general education teaching colleagues.
- Plans and utilizes instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect the learning styles and needs of native and non‑native speakers learning content in English.
- Promotes a positive classroom environment that celebrates student diversity and fosters a love of learning.
- Provides classroom structure to support learning for students from all backgrounds and proficiency levels.
- Demonstrates a commitment to excellence, equity, and high expectations for all students by building on their strengths.
- Communicates regularly and proactively with parents and families in a culturally proficient manner.
- Evaluates each student’s formative progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and prepares progress reports.
- Advocates for multilingual students’ needs within instructional teams.
- Works under the general supervision of the building principal to review student proficiency levels, appropriate English language services, and multilingual data.
- Co‑teaches a daily 30‑minute advisory class/morning meeting.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.

- Bachelor's Degree Required;
Master’s Degree Preferred. - Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in ESL 6‑12.
- Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement (required within 1 year of start date).
- Dual Certification (appropriate grade level or Special Education) a plus.
- Maintain professional competence through in‑service education activities provided by the district or self‑selected professional growth activities.
- Minimum of 2 years teaching experience, preferably in an urban public or charter school setting.
- Proven track record of raising student achievement scores in an urban/turnaround environment highly desired.
- Proficiency with technology (blended learning, teacher/family communication suites such as Remind, Google G‑Suite Apps, etc.) desirable.
- Second Language (Spanish or Portuguese) Proficiency a plus.
- Bilingual candidates and candidates of color strongly encouraged to apply.
- Current authorization to work in the United States.
- Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice.

Work YearTeachers in Salem Public Schools work an 185‑day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days).
Salary$59,719.90 to $116,414 per year.
