Job Description

As a Middle School Science Teacher you are a member of the core academic team and responsible for delivering effective, high‑quality, rigorous science instruction that engages all students in their learning. You work closely with special‑education and multilingual‑learning (ESL) teachers to ensure all students learn and grow academically and personally. You utilize the district’s science curricula, adapt instruction to individual student needs, collaborate with administrators and grade‑level teams, manage student behavior, use data to inform instruction, and participate in a professional learning community.

Role

Responsibilities
  • Teach science using the district curriculum and other appropriate learning activities reflecting a deep understanding of the state frameworks for grades six, seven, and eight.
  • Hold high expectations for student learning and behavior and provide support to help students meet those expectations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect students’ learning styles and needs.
  • Prepare teaching materials and related reports, including ongoing data analyses, to improve instruction and document student progress.
  • Provide classroom structure by promoting a positive environment conducive to learning.
  • Instruct and assist students individually or in groups, designing lessons that present and reinforce concepts.
  • Understand all students’ backgrounds, build positive relationships, and use culturally responsive teaching methods.
  • Maintain effective and regular communication with all students and their families.
  • Participate in professional development to enhance the educational experience.
  • Work under the general supervision of the principal and administrators to manage student behavior and assess achievement.
  • Support the school community with additional duties as needed.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Required);
    Master’s Degree (Preferred)
  • Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in Science grades 6-8
  • Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement (Required within 1 year of start date)
  • Ability to meet expectations of Massachusetts Standards and Effective Teaching Practices
  • Dual certification is a plus
  • Second‑language (Spanish) proficiency is a plus
  • Proficiency with technology (blended learning, communication suites, Google G‑Suite)
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
Work Year

Teachers in Salem Public Schools work a 185‑day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days). Please view the 2026‑27 district calendar.

Salary

Teacher salaries are determined by the Salem Teachers Union collective bargaining agreement (2024‑2027). Salary information can be found in Appendix
