Under the supervision of building principals, the music teacher will instruct students in grades 4-12 and assist school staff in improving and appreciating music instruction. The teacher will help students grow in enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through singing, movement, instrumental play, and listening. The role also includes duties directly related to this job description.
Role Responsibilities- Brass specialty preferred.
- Create a safe, welcoming learning environment with engaging lessons and activities within a skills‑based comprehensive band program that meets diverse learners’ needs.
- Establish positive relationships with students and families.
- Provide individual and small‑group instruction, adapting the curriculum to each student’s and instrument specialty’s needs to develop their musical skills.
- Co-teach elementary and middle school band classes.
- Collaborate with the instrumental music team to select and utilize repertoire from traditional, multicultural, and contemporary literature appropriate for each age and skill level.
- Collaborate with the team to plan and deliver school‑based and district‑wide concerts throughout the year.
- Maintain care of school‑owned instruments and equipment, preventing loss or abuse, and make minor adjustments or request repairs as necessary.
- Evaluate each pupil’s musical growth, performance, and understanding, assessing individual contributions to group performances.
- Commitment to students and families, valuing diversity and affirming the backgrounds of all community members.
- High expectations for yourself, students, and colleagues, modeling SPS values and seeking continuous improvement.
- Authentic, caring relationships with colleagues, students, and families, collaborating for student success.

- Bachelor’s degree required;
Master’s degree preferred. - Appropriate Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure required.
- Ability to meet Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice.
- Second language (Spanish and/or Portuguese) proficiency is a plus.
- Bilingual candidates and candidates of color strongly encouraged.
- Current authorization to work in the United States.
Teachers work a 185‑day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days).
SalaryTeacher salaries determined by the Salem Teachers Union collective bargaining agreement (2024‑2027). Salary information can be found in Appendix A.
