Job Description

Paraprofessionals assist teachers and other service providers in delivering an innovative, high‑quality education program for students with disabilities in Salem Public Schools. They work with staff to create a supportive learning environment that fosters academic success, social connection, and continuity. The role includes academic support, technology use, and behavioral interventions.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of assigned students’ profiles and learning needs, read IEPs, and participate in related professional development.
  • Report to assigned classes according to the schedule set by the special education supervisor.
  • Support and collaborate with general and special education teachers and service providers.
  • Reinforce and redeliver lessons as needed.
  • Assist with student supervision, administer behavior‑management programs, collect data, and follow classroom‑teacher direction.
  • Help teachers implement accommodations and specialized instruction strategies.
  • Facilitate social interactions and model language between peers.
  • Support students with technology use in in‑person, remote, or hybrid learning environments.
  • Escort and assist students throughout the building, during community experiences, lunch/recess, and arrival/dismissal.
  • Follow supervisor or teacher direction and ensure student safety at all times.
  • Step in to assist with general classroom operations and supervision as needed.
  • Attend district‑wide and building‑based professional development and training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as prescribed by building staff or the Executive Director of Special Education.

Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Forty‑eight credit hours of college coursework, an Associate’s degree, or a passing score on the Para Pro Assessment or Work Keys.
  • Safety‑Care trained or willing to receive training.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with middle‑school‑aged children.
  • Written and oral Spanish proficiency required.
  • Basic computer literacy; familiarity with Chromebooks and applications is advantageous.
  • Second language (Spanish or Portuguese) proficiency is a plus.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.
