Long Term Substitute Special Education Teacher (Preschool)

Early Childhood Center, Salem Public Schools, for the  school year.

Position Overview

Collaborative member of the Special Education team responsible for teaching students aged 3-5 in integrated or substantially separate programs. Duties include providing developmentally appropriate instruction, managing a continuous caseload, developing and implementing IEPs and behavioral interventions, ensuring consistency of accommodations, and working with paraprofessional staff to deliver a high‑quality program.

Role Responsibilities
  • Oversee programming for students in Integrated and/or substantially separate preschool classroom
  • Provide specialized instruction that engages all students based on best practice standards for public preschools
  • Develop data‑taking mechanisms with the classroom support team and analyze data to drive instruction and monitor progress
  • Maintain consistent positive relationships with students and manage behavior using positive strategies
  • Collaborate across school settings, parents, and community agencies to enhance student outcomes and implement IEPs
  • Write effective IEPs with SMART goals and accommodations and generate progress reports using IEP software
  • Administer, interpret, and report findings from standardized evaluations; administer remote assessments if needed
  • Present evidence of student progress during special education meetings
  • Evaluate students' preparedness using formal and informal measures
  • Support and assist paraprofessionals and other staff in executing classroom goals and IEP accommodations
  • Use innovative approaches to increase student access to learning and confidence
  • Adapt materials and lessons to meet specific IEP needs throughout the school day
  • Integrate social‑emotional learning strategies into lesson planning
  • Use technology to provide learning access and teach in a remote environment if needed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal, Special Education Supervisor, or Executive Director of Special Education

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree Required;
    Master’s Degree Preferred
  • Massachusetts teaching certification/lincese in Special Education (Moderate Disabilities) required
  • Severe Disabilities license preferred but not required
  • Experience with ABA methodology preferred but not required
  • Sheltered English Immersion endorsement required within 1‑year of start date
  • Safety Care trained or willing to be trained (District provides)
  • Ability to meet Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
  • Proficiency with technology (blended learning, teacher/family communication suites, Google G‑Suite) desirable
  • Maintain professional competence through in‑service education activities
  • Second language proficiency (Spanish and/or Portuguese) a plus
  • Bilingual candidates of color strongly encouraged to apply
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
Work Year

Teachers in Salem Public Schools work a 185‑day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days).

Salary

Salary is determined by the Salem Teachers Union collective bargaining agreement. Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
