Job DescriptionUnder the supervision of the Building Principals, the music teacher is responsible for teaching music education to pupils in grades PreK‑5 and assists the staff of the school in improving and fostering standards‑based music instruction. The teacher helps students grow in enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned experiences that include singing, moving to music, playing instruments, and listening.
The teacher also performs other duties directly related to this job description.
- Plans and executes a balanced, standards‑based choral and general music program and organizes class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
- Provides individual and small group instruction to adapt the music curriculum to the needs of each student.
- Encourages students to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible.
- Utilizes a repertoire of culturally diverse music literature, including traditional and contemporary works appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
- Maintains care and responsibility for school‑owned instruments and equipment, preventing loss or damage, making minor adjustments, and requesting repairs as needed.
- Uses state and national standards to assess each student’s musical growth, performance, and understanding.
- Collaborates with other music teachers to ensure vertical alignment of curriculum and to coordinate performances across grades 4‑12.
- Teaches chorus, chamber singers, and general music courses.
- Creates a safe, structured, and positive classroom environment responsive to student diversity.
- Selects appropriate music, books, and instructional aides to enhance learning, and requisitions instruments and supplies as necessary.
- Cooperates with the Building Principal and staff to provide musical programs for school assemblies, open houses, parent meetings, and seasonal events.
- Communicates with parents and school staff about individual student progress.

- Bachelor’s Degree required;
Master’s Degree preferred. - Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in Music.
- Maintains professional competence through in‑service education activities provided by the district and/or self‑selected professional growth activities.
- Minimum of 1‑year teaching experience; experience in an urban public school or charter school is preferred.
- Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) endorsement preferred.
- Second language (Spanish and/or Portuguese) proficiency is a plus.
