Salem State University invites applications for a full‑time, temporary faculty member specializing in Spanish Education beginning September 1 2027. This is a joint appointment between the World Languages and Cultures department and the McKeown School of Education, and plays a central leadership role in the university’s Spanish teacher licensure programs. The position carries significant responsibility for teaching, program coordination, hiring of adjuncts, field placement, advising, and collaboration across academic units and with state licensure offices.
ProgrammaticResponsibilities
Teaching, advising, scholarship, and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.
- Spanish Methods I and II courses with integrated, co‑requisite field experiences
- Student teaching seminar and practicum
- Advanced‑track courses such as Action Research and Clinical sequences
- Elementary and intermediate Spanish teaching
- Oversight and coordination of field placements, practica, and student teaching
- Ongoing collaboration with the Licensure Office
- Supervising practitioners and school partners across PK–12 districts
- Engage in service activities in both the Department of World Languages and Cultures and the McKeown School of Education
- Collaborate across disciplines to align licensure curricula, assessment practices, and clinical expectations
- Participate actively in state, regional, and national professional organizations related to world language education
- Contribute to professional advocacy efforts supporting world language education, teacher preparation, and student access (e.g., Seal of Biliteracy initiatives, HSI, state frameworks)
Depending on student enrollment trends and department needs, it is possible, but not guaranteed, to renew the temporary full‑time position in future academic years.
Qualifications- PhD or EdD in Spanish, World Language Education, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field
- Superior proficiency in Spanish
- Possession of or eligibility for Spanish teacher licensure at the PK–12 level
- Demonstrated expertise in proficiency‑based language instruction and assessment
- Experience teaching, mentoring, and/or supervising pre‑service teachers
- Experience and ability to coordinate clinical experiences and work effectively with PK–12 partners
- Experience working in jointly administered teacher licensure programs
- Familiarity with Massachusetts DESE licensure requirements
- Record of professional engagement, scholarship, or advocacy in world language education
- Experience with accreditation, clinical partnerships, or program‑level assessment
- Strong advising and collaborative skills appropriate to a joint appointment
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, access, and community‑engaged teacher preparation

This is an on‑site position in Salem, MA with on‑campus, in‑person responsibilities.
