Overview

The psychology department at Salem State University is seeking a full‑time Professor of Practice in Counseling, beginning in September 2027. The role focuses on teaching primarily evening graduate courses in the Master of Science in Counseling program and undergraduate day classes, advising graduate and undergraduate students, and serving as the Clinical Training Director. The faculty member will provide supervision to instructors, oversee practicum and internship programs, and work to infuse multicultural content and social justice principles across teaching, research, supervision, advising, mentoring, and training.

The appointment will contribute to and support efforts to seek and maintain accreditation for the MS Counseling program.

Salary range: $87,000–$92,000 for the rank of assistant professor.

The position is a four‑year, fixed‑term appointment ending May 31, 2031.

Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract, including teaching, advising, and maintaining modern skills and knowledge in their field of practice. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester.

Clinical Training Director Responsibilities

Verify students’ internship eligibility and readiness.

Advise, support, and mentor students through their search for an internship/practicum site.

Manage current and develop new relationships with internship and practicum sites, and oversee quality review.

Secure new practicum and internship sites as needed to ensure quality training is available for all students.

Address training and supervision issues or concerns that may arise at internship sites.

Hold mandatory Practicum/Internship Readiness Meetings to orient students to requirements for completing clinical training within the MS Counseling Program.

Manage ALCEA, an electronic database that lists internship sites and supervisors.

Meet weekly with practicum/internship instructors to provide supervision and consultation.

Develop and implement evaluation systems to monitor the quality of the training delivery.

Ensure that all federal and state regulatory requirements are met.

Direct educational programming that promotes professional excellence for clinical interns.

Oversee the annual review and update of the Clinical Graduate Student Training Manual.

Maintain documentation on practicum and internship students.

Collaborate with site training supervisors on the creation of behaviorally anchored remediation plans for students with practicum or internship problems.

Serve as an instructor of the Practicum/Internship Seminar, including summer session courses.

Participate as a member of MARIACES (Massachusetts / Rhode Island Association for Counselor Education and Supervision).

Required Qualifications

An MA or MS in Counseling Psychology with at least five years of graduate‑level teaching experience.

Three years of post‑independent licensure experience.

Demonstrated effectiveness in graduate and/or undergraduate teaching.

License eligibility or licensure as a psychologist and/or mental health counselor in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Experience in clinical supervision and training at the graduate level.

A record of implementing inclusivity and social justice principles.

Preferred Qualifications

Earned PhD or PsyD in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an accredited program.

Experience and commitment to teaching, research, and advising/mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and learning styles.

A demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from varied backgrounds and to support an inclusive learning environment.

Working Location

On‑site position in Salem, MA, with on‑campus, in‑person responsibilities.
