Description

The Politics, Policy and International Relations Department at Salem State University invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track position specializing in public policy, methodology and civic engagement. The candidate should have familiarity with public policy in areas such as housing, education, transportation, policing, poverty, environment, and/or immigration. This position will play a critical role in the running of the North Shore Policy Lab.

Housed in the department’s Bates Center for Public and Global Affairs, the Policy Lab will involve students in research conducted on behalf of local and state government and non‑governmental organizations in order to prepare them for jobs in the public, non‑profit and/or private sectors. The candidate should be well‑versed in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and be able to teach our current introductory and advanced research‑methods courses.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of community‑based research and community partnerships with a focus on equity issues in the context of urban areas like those served by Salem State.

Teaching, research, and service expectations for this position are integrated within a teaching‑centered departmental environment. The successful candidate will teach a range of undergraduate courses, which may include public policy, urban policy, applied policy research, research methods and statistics, state and local government, civic engagement, immigration, and the North Shore Policy Lab Practicum, while employing innovative, student‑centered pedagogies. The candidate is also expected to demonstrate expertise in community‑based or community‑engaged research, contribute to public scholarship, and maintain a strong record of or clear potential for scholarly productivity, including publication in peer‑reviewed journals, or a well‑developed research pipeline encouraged to apply.

In addition, the role includes significant administrative and mentoring responsibilities through leadership of the North Shore Policy Lab, including building and sustaining community partnerships, identifying and managing applied research projects, securing external funding through grant writing, overseeing budgets and reporting, and mentoring and supervising undergraduate students engaged in Policy Lab research initiatives.

Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. Duties include teaching, advising, scholarship and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.

• Earned PhD in public policy or a related field from an accredited institution
• At least two years of experience teaching full time at a Massachusetts State University or comparable institution
• Advising and/or mentoring experience
• Experience conducting community‑based research
• Experience teaching at the college/university level
• Experience running a policy lab with undergraduate students
• Demonstrated relationships/partnerships with North Shore NGOs and local governments
