Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning Technician, Salem Public Schools, Salem, MA [SY2025‑2026]
Reports to: Director of Buildings and Grounds
This HVAC Technician is responsible for the maintenance and repair of building HVAC systems and gas fired equipment in Salem Public Schools. The incumbent performs a full range of HVAC duties, ensuring compliance with Massachusetts HVAC codes and standards.
Principal Responsibilities- Install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilating, air‑conditioning, and refrigeration equipment and related fixtures.
- Install, inspect, and maintain duct systems, refrigeration piping, control wiring, and other HVAC components.
- Maintain school boilers per Massachusetts State inspection codes.
- Perform seasonal maintenance on all heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning equipment, including classroom, rooftop, and air‑handling units.
- Perform water treatment and maintenance for cooling towers and chilled water systems.
- Install, inspect, and maintain steam and hot water heating and ventilating units.
- Monitor building management systems, pressure gauges, and other indicators to detect malfunctions; adjust controls and perform testing.
- Replace worn or defective parts (switches, fuses, motors, bearings, valves, etc.) and repair equipment.
- Join, cut, thread, solder, and brazes tubing or pipes; mount compressors and condenser units; connect motors and controls.
- Calculate heat loads for new installations and treat water systems.
- Make and assemble ducts, chassis parts, and structural components for HVAC systems.
- Recover CFC and HCFC refrigerants using safe procedures.
- Supervise licensed and skilled trades workers assisting with HVAC repair and installation.
- Maintain environmental conditions in classrooms, gyms, labs, and other spaces within acceptable ranges.
- Maintain all building equipment, including BMS systems, VAVs, fan coils, unit ventilators, RTUs, chillers, exhausts, pumps, and commercial boilers.
- Operate refrigeration equipment in kitchens and cafeterias.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Valid EPA universal license or ability to obtain within one year.
- Valid driver’s license.
- At least three years’ experience with HVAC systems and with computer‑based building management systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and replace HVAC components and controls.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience with email, online time‑keeping, and computerized management software (Operations Hero preferred).
- Ability to work outside scheduled hours and on weekends; reliable transportation between schools.
- Knowledge of BMS systems (Johnson Controls, Metasys, Open protocols).
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
- Ability to stoop and bend for long periods and work on hands and knees.
- Capability to work alone and climb ladders.
- Compliance with all standard safety codes and practices.
- Effective communication with peers and customers.
- Hours:
8‑hour shift between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM, with ability to work outside scheduled hours and on weekends. - Work year: 52 weeks per year.

According to AFSCME contract, plus available overtime. Additional benefits include a supportive work environment and generous benefits.
