Living RequirementsMust live within 25 miles AND 30 minutes of Salem Operating Area
Essential Functions- Understand and apply all welding specifications and procedures for construction, fabrication, and maintenance on all pipeline facilities, including casings, within NiSource Distribution Operations.
- Perform electric arc welding (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) on natural gas pressurized steel piping, equipment, and fittings in accordance with approved procedures.
- Use oxy‑acetylene to cut and fabricate material.
- As a welder/stopple combination, perform hot tapping, plugging operations, and set completion plugs on all sizes and pressures of natural gas pipelines.
- Maintain all welding equipment and pipe drilling, tapping, and plugging equipment.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in plant‑field or natural gas construction operations.
- Experience welding and operating drilling and plugging equipment.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions, confined spaces, and awkward positions.
- Knowledge of tie‑in and purging procedures.
- Knowledge of monitoring pressure and gas flow.
- Maintain and operate equipment used for cutting, drilling, plugging, and setting completion plugs on natural gas pipeline systems.
- Pass post‑offer physical capacity test if required.
- Working knowledge of operation policies, procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA pipeline safety and underground construction practices.
- Self‑motivation and ability to work with little direct supervision and make sound independent decisions.
- Ability to work in a team environment (field operations, technical operations, contractors, integration center).
- Physical ability to negotiate varied terrain and building structures, and to work in all weather and physically demanding situations.
- Mechanical aptitude and skill with hand tools.
- Strong analytical skills; apply basic math related to pipe fitting and welding operations.
- Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver’s license; ability to operate company vehicle.
- Preference given to candidates with stoppel and welding qualifications.
As a public utility, NiSource must provide continuous service to customers at all times. Employees may be required to work outside normal hours and perform tasks outside their normal responsibilities in support of emergency operations.

Salary Range$50.59 – $57.19 per hour
