The Department of Revenue is recruiting for a Tax Auditor 1 position in the Personal Tax & Compliance Division, Compliance Bend Unit. The role is headquartered in the Bend office and may offer in‑state hybrid work after training. Training will be onsite five days a week for up to twelve months. After training, the auditor will be required to work onsite two days a week or as business needs dictate.
ResponsibilitiesA sample of job duties (not exhaustive):
- Develop pre‑audit analysis, identify issues, and schedule appointments. Use independent judgment to determine scope, techniques, audit plans, and sampling to test the accounting system.
- Conduct in‑person, virtual, telephonic, or correspondence audits to determine appropriate adjustments of tax, including business income and expenses reported on individual returns, by reviewing financial books, tracing receipts, and matching source documents.
- Evaluate internal controls for sufficiency to properly account for income and expenses; ensure accounting transactions conform to accepted principles and tax laws, rules, and regulations by reviewing treatment of issues or returns.
- Research, interpret, and apply federal, state, and local laws, regulations, revenue rulings, and court decisions to recognize and resolve tax issues.
- Prepare audit work papers, reports, and make changes to taxpayer’s return in a computer system, documenting the scope, techniques, conclusions, and changes. Present findings to the taxpayer and/or representative.
Tax Auditor 1 ($4,954.00 – $7,592.00)
- Four years of experience in tax compliance, preparation, auditing, defense, accounting, law training, or developing tax forms or instructions; OR An equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field will substitute for up to three years of experience.
Tax Auditor Entry ($4,312.00 - $5,988.00)
- Three years of experience in tax compliance, preparation, auditing, defense, accounting, law training, or developing tax forms or instructions; OR A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field; OR An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

- This is a SEIU‑represented position.
- Salary listed is the non‑PERS qualifying range; PERS qualification adds 6.95%.
