** STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
** Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being.

In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent of this position serves as a substitute for professional teachers on an intermittent basis. The instructional area(s) will normally be general elementary subjects. The Substitute Teacher provides education instruction in a classroom setting utilizing practical teaching methods and techniques to a designated group of students. Conducts classes in accordance with prescribed course outlines, pre-developed lesson plans, and supervisory directions.

Performs instructional services for assigned classes performing normal range of instructional functions pertaining to organization of daily work plans, conducting classes, and assisting students in performance of planned activities.

Within definitely prescribed limits, applies judgment pertaining to deviation from established class schedules to accommodate time limitations or interruptions.  Provides added illustration or information to clarify important points to meet the individual or group needs which may require some deviation from planned schedule.

Maintains records pertaining to attendance, test results, subject matter covered, and other items for use by the regular teacher. Records and reports unusual situations requiring further attention by the school administration or regular teacher.

Administers standardized or locally developed subject matter proficiency tests. Scores and records same. May utilize results to discuss group or individual progress with students.

Maintains normal discipline and is sensitive to student's social and academic needs. Cooperates with other members of the staff in working with student problems.
