The Teaching Assistant works out of the Oregon State Penitentiary and manages and facilitates computer-based and paper assessments at the three Salem-area prisons, and provides instructional assistance in the GED study labs. Travel between the facilities is required.

Computer Lab and Testing Support
  • Facilitates student access to GED computer lab, providing training on computer functions.
  • Assists faculty and staff with computer use.
  • Mentors students on using GED study lab software.
  • Explains and checks automated testing processes and proctors exams.
  • Oversees maintenance and setup of equipment and procedures for instructional lab; manually downloads Pearson Vue tests, uploads and downloads them to/from student networks, and ensures appropriate tests are ready.
  • Works closely with Pearson Vue and Oregon Department of Corrections IT departments to troubleshoot problems.
  • Meets all scheduled testing and computer lab sessions; collaborates with faculty to ensure coverage.
  • Determines and administers CASAS and Best Plus tests under direction of program staff.
Student Attendance & Progress Records
  • Explains testing requirements to new students, including those who desire to opt out.
  • Explains consequences of opting out and benefits of a GED.
  • Verifies student attendance.
  • Prepares and maintains student records and informs staff of student progress.
  • Adheres to all DOC policies and procedures, including progressive discipline.
Department Responsibilities
  • Offers suggestions on system improvements.
  • Provides assistance in operational duties and back-up to other staff.
  • Participates in relevant training, including professional development activities and updates on computer programs.
  • Participates in program planning.
  • Understands and abides college and DOC policies/regulations.
  • Maintains a DOC contractor credential and completes necessary trainings.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent of two (2) years full‑time work experience reflective of the knowledge, skills, and experience to perform essential functions. Typically achieved through an Associate’s Degree or two years of full‑time work experience. The college will review relevant education and experience as equivalent in most cases.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in an educational support role.
  • Experience with applicable computer programs and equipment.
  • Pearson Vue test administrator certification.
  • CASAS Implementation and Appraisal Training.
  • Experience using Pearson Vue’s testing system.
  • Ability to use internet/web browser and multimedia instructional materials.
Schedule & Modality

Position not eligible for remote or hybrid work.

Terms of Employment
  • 100% classified assignment at pay grade 9.
  • 6‑month probationary period.
  • Requires onsite work at requested times.
  • Flexible schedule may include evenings and weekends.
  • May require use of personal vehicle for transportation between campus locations.
  • Official transcripts required upon hire.
  • Employees must maintain Oregon, Washington, or Idaho residency.
  • Successful applicants must pass a background inquiry, including criminal, driving, credit, and full background checks.
  • Providing false information will result in application rejection, employment offer withdrawal, or dismissal.
Physical Requirements

Medium work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires going up stairs and carrying supplies.
