Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-depth traffic engineering analyses, including traffic impact studies, traffic signal plans, timing diagrams, and traffic crash analyses. Operate complex computer software, advanced camera equipment, field measuring devices, traffic count equipment, and develop computer applications in spreadsheets and databases.
  • Review and respond to requests and complaints about traffic signals, signing and striping, speeding, crosswalks, lighting, roadway safety and design, and other complex traffic-related requests. These requests may come from the public, other Marion County employees, or other public agencies. Review of the request often involves coordinating directly with the complainant, conducting field reviews, data collection, research, working in and around traffic, working in construction zones, coordinating with multiple agencies, applying advanced traffic analysis methods, developing and applying prioritization systems, assessing traffic control needs and warrant criteria, judging and applying engineering standards, and extensive letter and report writing.

    Also involves the use of engineering analysis and corresponding software to evaluate the operations of the transportation network.
  • Independently review and comment on traffic control and roadway design plans for construction projects prepared by other engineers and technicians from Marion County, outside agencies, consultants, and contractors. Prepare detailed design plans for specific projects when needed and develop Traffic Control Plans for County projects. Prepare cost estimates for traffic signals, flashers, channelization, and transportation system projects. Address engineering and construction issues as they arise.
  • Oversee various projects and act as lead worker at times for various lower-level positions in the section. Provide technical assistance to others in the department and other departments. Draft and develop policies, procedures, reports and standards. Attend assorted meetings and conferences and keep abreast of industry trends in the traffic field. Participate in professional groups and committees as needed related to adopting and establishing traffic control requirements, standards, and procedures.
  • Provide engineering analysis and technical support for long-range transportation planning efforts. Provide signal and traffic-related support for overlay contracts and other capital construction or maintenance projects. Develop and/or review signal timing plans, school flasher plans, and other traffic-specific issues. Forecast future volumes on County roadways and use advanced computer software to forecast roadway operations and geometric needs. Develop solutions for identified roadway deficiencies and prepare preliminary designs.
  • Perform other Traffic Engineering and Civil Engineering duties as assigned to broaden experience within the Civil Engineering profession.
