Senior Structural Steel Engineering Supervisor (Civil / Structural – Utility Industry)

Overview

This position provides senior-level leadership and supervision for the Company’s Structural Steel Engineering team supporting utility-related projects. The Senior Structural Steel Engineering Supervisor is responsible for managing onsite, remote, and offshore engineering staff ensuring consistent application of engineering standards, quality control, staff development, and compliance with applicable utility codes and client requirements.

This role focuses on technical oversight, supervision, training, and process improvement, as a working supervisor, you will not just manage but participate in day-to-day operations. The position works closely with Company leadership and cross-functional teams to support strategic objectives, workforce development, and the successful execution of utility projects.

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities
  • Provides direct supervision and leadership to onsite, remote, and offshore structural engineering staff.
  • Assigns work, establishes priorities, and monitors workloads to ensure schedules and commitments are met.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains engineering standards, procedures, and best practices related to utility structural steel projects.
  • Reviews and oversees engineering work for technical accuracy, code compliance, constructability, and adherence to company standards.
  • Ensures engineering activities comply with applicable industry codes and standards, including but not limited to ASCE, AISC, IBC, NESC, and related utility requirements.
  • Participates in day-to-day operations completing assigned engineering duties.
  • Coordinates with Sales, Project Management, Estimating, and Operations to support project execution and customer expectations.
  • Serves as a technical resource and escalation point for engineering staff on complex utility structure issues.
  • Leads the onboarding, training, mentoring, and professional development of engineering personnel across all locations.
  • Identifies training needs and develops structured training programs for junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and provides regular feedback, coaching, and corrective action when necessary.
  • Participates in hiring, staffing decisions, and workforce planning for the engineering team.
  • Develops and tracks performance metrics to improve efficiency, quality, and consistency across the engineering organization.
  • Supports continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes, communication, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participates as a member of the Company’s management team, contributing to short- and long-term strategic planning.
Secondary Functions
  • Assists the General Manager with special projects or initiatives as assigned.
  • Supports customer and vendor interactions related to engineering standards, technical reviews, and project coordination.
  • Provides leadership support during peak workload periods or organizational changes.
Job Scope

This position involves recurring work situations with a high degree of complexity due to the technical nature of utility structural steel projects and the management of a geographically distributed engineering workforce. The role requires independent judgment, leadership, and decision-making with limited direct supervision. Errors in judgment, communication, or oversight may impact project outcomes, customer relationships, and company performance.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Direct supervision of the structural engineering team, including onsite, remote, and offshore engineers.
  • Responsibility for hiring, training, performance management, and disciplinary actions within the engineering group.
  • Interpersonal Contacts:
  • Internal contacts include the General Manager, Executive Leadership, Sales, Project Management, Operations, Quality Control, Purchasing, Production, and Engineering staff. External contacts may include customers, consultants, utilities, and suppliers.

Education – Certification and/or Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or Structural Engineering required.
  • Master’s degree in civil or Structural Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in utility-related structural engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising or leading engineering teams.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
