Job Summary

The City of Salem Police Department is hiring a Police Officer – Oregon In-State Lateral. Applicants must have been employed as an Oregon police officer within the past 12 months for at least three full‑time years. If you meet these criteria, please review the following.

Salary Step
  • Step 1: $39.11 per hour, $6,779.07 per month
  • Step 2: $41.07 per hour, $7,118.80 per month
  • Step 3: $43.12 per hour, $7,474.13 per month
  • Step 4: $45.28 per hour, $7,848.53 per month
  • Step 5: $47.54 per hour, $8,240.27 per month
  • Step 6: $49.92 per hour, $8,652.80 per month
  • Step 7: $51.42 per hour, $8,912.80 per month
Incentives
  • 2%–10% extra duty / specialized assignment incentive
  • 2.5%–5% extra duty / specialized assignment incentive
  • 5% bi‑lingual incentive

What You Will Do
  • Patrol assigned areas to enforce laws and ordinances
  • Answer and investigate citizen complaints, reports, and crime/accident scenes
  • Preserve evidence and document scenes as required
  • Meet with the public and present safety information during community meetings

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and a valid Basic Police Certification from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST)
  • Three or more years of full‑time sworn police work in Oregon within the past 12 months, with certification not expired
  • Valid Oregon Class C driver’s license and a driving record meeting City standards
  • Ability to work periodic overtime, 24‑hour rotating shifts, holidays and weekends
  • At least 21 years old at hire date
  • U.S. citizenship or ability to become a citizen within 18 months of hire
  • Completion of competitive testing, including physical fitness, reading and writing skills, vision, hearing, psychological exams and a thorough background investigation
  • Pass pre‑employment drug test (including marijuana) and background check
