Position: Director of Pharmacy  Oncology & Infusion Services

Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt (FTE 1.0)

Reports To: Executive Leadership

Position Overview

The Director of Pharmacy Oncology & Infusion Services provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for all pharmacy services supporting oncology and specialty infusion care. This is a working director role
, maintaining direct clinical involvement while building infrastructure, leading teams, and ensuring regulatory, operational, and financial excellence.

Oncology services represent the majority of this role; however, the Director also provides pharmacy leadership across additional specialties as needed. This position plays a critical role in advancing patient-centered care, ensuring medication safety, and supporting organizational growth through scalable and compliant pharmacy operations.

The Director collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, and administrative leaders to design, implement, and continuously improve clinical, operational, and safety practices across infusion services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert oncology and specialty pharmacotherapy consultation to physicians and nursing staff
  • Review and verify chemotherapy, immunotherapy, bi-specifics, biosimilars, and supportive care regimens
  • Serve as an escalation resource for complex or high-risk medication decisions
  • Lead development and maintenance of treatment protocols, order sets, and clinical pathways
  • Assess patient-specific factors including labs, organ function, drug interactions, and contraindications
  • Support adverse event management and optimization of supportive care
Pharmacy Operations & Oversight
  • Direct day-to-day pharmacy operations, including admixing, verification, and medication distribution
  • Ensure sterile and hazardous drug preparation in compliance with USP 797 and USP 800
  • Oversee inventory management, dose rounding, and waste reduction strategies
  • Establish efficient workflows, double-check systems, and effective use of EHR and pharmacy technology
Regulatory Compliance & Quality
  • Serve as pharmacy leader for regulatory compliance (Board of Pharmacy, USP, OSHA, DEA)
  • Maintain inspection readiness and support accreditation activities
  • Lead medication safety programs and quality improvement initiatives
Financial Stewardship & Formulary Strategy
  • Lead formulary and biosimilar strategy
  • Partner with finance and revenue cycle teams to optimize reimbursement and documentation
  • Monitor drug utilization trends and manage medication spend responsibly
  • Support contracting strategies with wholesalers, GPOs, and manufacturers
  • Build, lead, and mentor a growing pharmacy team as infusion services expand
  • Recruit, onboard, and develop pharmacists and pharmacy staff
  • Provide ongoing education and competency programs for pharmacists, nurses, and providers
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Ensure processes are in place for patient and caregiver education on medications and side-effect management
  • Provide oversight for investigational drug handling and research-related pharmacy processes
Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm

    D) from an accredited school
  • Minimum 5 years of oncology pharmacy experience
  • Minimum 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience
  • Strong clinical knowledge in oncology pharmacotherapy
  • Experience with USP 797/800 and hazardous drug handling
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage complex workflows
Preferred Qualifications
  • PGY1 and PGY2 Oncology Residency training
  • Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP)
  • Master’s degree (MBA, MHA) or formal leadership training
  • Experience in ambulatory or community oncology infusion settings
  • Experience with pharmacy budgeting, contracting, or financial management
