Salem Health, Hospitals and Clinics is excited to announce that we are looking for an Speech Language Pathologist Clinical Fellow to join our Acute Care Speech Therapy team. The Clinical Fellow commits to a one (1) year fellowship position to gain excellent patient care experience and further their professional development.
Our collaborative acute rehab team is composed of speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and acute rehab therapy aids. The speech team provides comprehensive speech, language, swallowing and cognitive therapy to a diverse patient population at a Level 2 trauma hospital with over 600 beds. Care is provided to patients on units such as intensive care, cardiovascular care, neurology, neuro‑trauma, oncology and general medical and surgical units.
Instrumental evaluations are performed on‑site daily.
In your clinical fellowship year, you will apply the principles of professional practice in Speech‑Language Pathology to evaluate and treat patients with the focus on restoring and enhancing a person’s ability to function as independently as possible. To meet those goals, you will:
- Conduct evidence‑based evaluations for speech, language, cognitive and swallowing disorders.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans with measurable and functional goals, including post‑acute home programs.
- Collaborate with patients, families and interdisciplinary teams to support care and discharge planning including participation in daily care rounds.
- Recommend, administer and interpret instrumental assessments (e.g., modified barium swallow studies, flexible endoscopic evaluations of swallowing) as appropriate.
- Focus on exceptional patient care and customer service, fostering a supportive and respectful environment.
- Learn to manage a dynamic caseload efficiently, adapting to department needs and productivity expectations.
- Work closely with a dedicated team of acute care speech language pathologists, including an onsite clinical fellowship supervisor.

- Master’s degree in speech‑language pathology required.
- Eligible for a temporary license in Oregon under the supervision of an ASHA certified SLP.
- Adult acute hospital clinical internship or experience preferred.
- If completing MBSS or FEES/FEEST studies, specialty training and/or coursework completion is required and may include MBSImp courses, FEES/FEEST courses, and/or other coursework identified by the organization as indicated.
