Information Systems Specialist 6 – Senior Wireless Systems Specialist (Radio) within the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Delivery & Operations Division – Maintenance & Operations Branch, Wireless Communications Section, Milwaukie. The role supports Oregon’s critical radio communications infrastructure, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting the statewide Public Safety Wireless system. The position is a journey level assignment in a supportive, high‑performing environment with opportunities for professional growth.

• Diagnose user problems and address complex issues on the mission‑critical statewide Public Safety Wireless system.
• Troubleshoot major system failures of the state‑wide voice and data radio, microwave systems, and multi‑agency dispatch console.
• Lead and coordinate with other Wireless staff to resolve large statewide system problems, restoring public safety communications.
• Support the state’s Public Safety Radio System customers and dispatch centers with repairs, programming, and assistance.
• Mentor and assist other Wireless Technicians.
• Conduct research for large or unusual projects, build implementation plans, and make recommendations for new technology or business processes.
• Use soldering equipment to replace defective circuit board components or modules.
• Install, test, and replace a variety of cable types supporting wireless equipment.
• Plan implementation schedules, ensure configuration compliance, and document installations.
• Operate a Sno‑Cat or UTV to access remote locations in inclement weather.
• Climb and work on towers and antenna structures up to 180 feet.
• Travel region‑wide or statewide in all weather conditions.
• Move or lift heavy objects exceeding 70 pounds following safety procedures.

Five (5) years of information systems experience in wireless systems (e.g., two‑way radio, microwave).

OR

Associate’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related field, OR completion of a two‑year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related field; AND three (3) years of information systems experience in wireless systems.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or related field; AND one (1) year of information systems experience in wireless systems.

• Maximum 60‑minute response time to 8085 Deer Creek Lane, Milwaukie, OR 97222 for emergency call‑outs.
• Valid U.S. driver’s license with acceptable driving record; pre‑employment driving record check required.

• Journeyman level experience in Land Mobile Radio systems (VHF/UHF repeaters, analog, digital, and P25 radios, 700/800 MHz trunked radio), terrestrial microwave systems, AC and DC power systems.
• Experience with analog and IP Radio Dispatch Console Systems.
• Proficiency with radio propagation software.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and customer‑service ability.
• Computer literacy and willingness to learn new technologies.
• Familiarity with FCC rules and regulations for public service radio.
