Job Summary

The Criminal Justice Division (CJD) of the Oregon Department of Justice conducts specialized local, state, and federal criminal investigations and prosecutions and provides highly trained and experienced special agents, prosecutors, and analysts to fight crime across Oregon. The Division is the only agency in Oregon that combines the skills of all three disciplines in a single agency to comprehensively address crime in our communities, and it also offers outreach and training to citizens, victim service providers, and law‑enforcement partners.

We are seeking applications from current or previous prosecutors for the Assistant Attorney General position in the Organized Crime Section. The position may be based in Salem, Portland, or Eugene and requires periodic travel throughout the state. It is eligible for a hybrid schedule of working in the office and remotely.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with CJD special agents, local law‑enforcement agencies, and District Attorney offices to investigate and prosecute complex financial crimes and organized criminal enterprises.
  • Prosecute other criminal activity as needed, including homicide, public corruption, election law violations, and officer use‑of‑force cases.
  • Evaluate and pursue criminal cases, including conflict and specialty cases, on request from district attorneys statewide.
  • Provide advice and support to district attorneys and their deputies.
  • Present at trainings across the state.
Required Qualifications
  • Active member of the Oregon State Bar in good standing on the effective date of appointment.
  • Five or more years of practicing law as an attorney.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of criminal and evidence codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with people from a variety of disciplines (e.g., state agency personnel, law‑enforcement officers, county prosecutors).
  • Excellent organization, analytical, oral presentation, advocacy, and writing skills.
  • Experience training prosecutors and/or law‑enforcement agents.
  • Willing and able to travel extensively throughout the state and nation, including overnight stays.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to public service.
  • Ability to successfully clear a comprehensive criminal background investigation and reference checks.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience prosecuting high‑public‑interest cases.
  • Experience prosecuting RICO and other organized crime cases.
  • Experience working collaboratively with law‑enforcement during long‑term investigations.
  • Interest in financial crimes cases.

Salary and Benefits

This OAJA‑represented position will be filled at either the Assistant Attorney General or Senior Assistant Attorney General level. The salary range reflects base salary only; PERS participation increases the base by 6.95%. Employees participate in the Public Employee Retirement System with a 6% employee contribution.
