Deputy Director (Business Operations Supervisor
2)
The Oregon Board of Accountancy is looking for an experienced, forward-thinking Deputy Director to lead our business operations, support our mission to protect the public, and serve as the right hand to the Executive Director.
The Oregon Board of Accountancy licenses and regulates over 8,000 Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), Public Accountants (PAs), municipal auditors, and 900+ public accounting firms. Our mission is to protect Oregon consumers by ensuring that only qualified, competent professionals practice public accountancy in compliance with established standards and rules. We are a self-funded agency with a biennial budget of $4.3 million, supported by licensing fees.
As Deputy Director, you'll take the lead on the day-to-day operations of the agency. You'll oversee licensing operations, financial management, performance tracking, legislative implementation, and more, freeing the Executive Director to focus on external relationships, CPA pipeline support and strategic outreach. You'll also serve as Acting Executive Director in the Director's absence, making this a critical leadership role with wide-reaching impact.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Leading all business operations of the Board and coordinating across licensing and compliance teams.
- Serving as Deputy Director and assuming Executive Director duties when needed.
- Collaborating with state agencies, industry organizations, and national boards.
- Overseeing budget planning, financial controls, procurement, and contract management.
- Supervising and coaching staff; supporting performance management and development.
- Ensuring alignment with the Board's strategic goals, DEI commitments, and key performance measures.
- Acting as the agency's communications lead, managing the website, social media, and external messaging.
- Directing legislative and rule making processes, acting as the Board's Rules Coordinator.
Minimum qualifications include four years of lead work, supervision, or progressively related experience; or one year of related experience and a bachelor's degree in a related field. Related experience must include working with professional licensing and/or regulatory boards.
We are looking for candidates who bring demonstrated leadership in operations, policy implementation, and team management; excellent communication skills both written and verbal and strong analytical abilities; knowledge of state budgeting, procurement, and regulatory processes (preferred); a collaborative and proactive approach, with a strong commitment to public service; expertise in management principles, including planning, directing, and resource allocation; familiarity with state systems and practices in budgeting, HR, labor relations, and business services;
ability to interpret and apply laws and administrative rules governing Board operations; and a high level of professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to lead within a mission-driven agency.
You will play a key role in a small, dedicated team where your contributions are visible and meaningful. This is a chance to lead with purpose, support consumer protection, and shape the future of public accountancy in Oregon.
Our amazing benefits include:
- Comprehensive health coverage: low-cost, high-coverage medical, vision, and dental plans for you and your dependents.
- Generous paid time off: 11 paid holidays annually, 3 personal business days each year, 8 hours of sick leave accrued monthly, and progressive vacation leave starting at 10 hours a month, increasing with years of service.
- Additional benefits: life insurance, short- and long-term disability, deferred compensation savings plans, and flexible spending accounts for health and dependent care.
- Competitive compensation: eligible for cost-of-living adjustments and annual salary increases (until you reach the top of the salary range). Your application materials will be used to complete an Equal Pay Analysis to determine your salary placement upon hire.
- Retirement: membership in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS)/Oregon Public Service Retirement Plan (OPSRP).
- Wellness: access to resources that support work-life balance, health, and overall well-being.
- Career growth opportunities: access to professional development and advancement to build your career with the State of Oregon.
- Student loan forgiveness: as a state employee, you may qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, helping you achieve financial freedom while making a difference.
