Sergeant - Institutions

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is seeking corrections certified applicants to join our team as a Sergeant in the Institutions Division. Our agency houses adults in custody awaiting trial and serving sentences of one year or less. We are looking for candidates with a strong foundation in leadership, who value employee development, open communication, and building collaborative relationships with community partners.

The selected candidate will have opportunities to serve in a variety of assignments, including shift supervision, administrative sergeant and judicial security sergeant.

In addition to the base pay rates above, Institutions Sergeants may be eligible for a variety of pay incentives including:

• Education 4% (2% associate degree or equivalent and 2% bachelor's degree or equivalent)
• Certification 6% (3% for intermediate and 3% for advanced)

• Longevity 3 (L3): $71.67 Hourly, $12,422.80 Monthly, $ Annually (Eligible for L3 after 20 years of Marion County service and at least 1 year on Longevity 2.)

This classification serves as a first line supervisor; duties include directing, supervising, planning, and coordinating the activities of assigned personnel. Assignments may include administrative and investigative responsibilities.

Works under the general supervision of an officer of higher rank who assigns duties and reviews work for effectiveness and conformance to policies, rules, and regulations as established.

• Participate in the development and review of office policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Facilitate and maintain positive communication between subordinates and superiors.
• Participate in management meetings and training.
• Receive and address public complaints and inquiries which may include the investigation of internal affairs as assigned or delegated by the Sheriff.
• Recommend necessary training for subordinates to handle their assignments efficiently and effectively.
• Supervise the investigation of major incidents; assign duties and track the management of cases. Evaluate and approve recommendations and case plans made by employees; appear and testify in court as required.
