Position Summary
Volunteer Engagement Coordinator – Part‑time (12 hours/week, Saturdays) at Salem Campus, Salem, OR. Salary: $24.04–$25.81 per hour.
Primary Responsibilities- Respond to general program and scheduling questions from participants and the public via telephone, email, or in person.
- Serve as a primary contact for existing and potential volunteers, promoting inclusion for volunteers of varying abilities.
- Coordinate, support, and provide coaching feedback to volunteers; create a respectful work environment and direct escalated concerns to the Manager, Volunteer Engagement.
- Assist with day‑to‑day implementation and support for key activities and coordinate with other teams implementing complementary activities.
- Work with Volunteer Engagement Data Specialist on program data: purging lists, creating records, maintaining volunteer contact information, service records, and shift data.
- Serve as a resource for conflict resolution among guests, staff, volunteers per established procedures.
- Assist with a weekly electronic volunteer newsletter, update/maintain databases, moderate online groups, schedule volunteers, attend events, and update volunteer documents.
- Coordinate onboarding, motivation, feedback, documentation, and retention of shelter volunteers.
- Provide guidance, support, resources, and tools to staff who supervise and work with volunteers.
- Provide ongoing training for all volunteers regarding policies and shelter programs.
- Maintain confidentiality of information and sensitive topics according to OH policies and procedures.
- Attend and assist with volunteer event functions.
- Work with animals, occasionally handling individual animals safely and respectfully.
- Prepare and conduct volunteer surveys and other communications.
- Recognize and celebrate volunteer contributions through events, awards, and other recognition efforts.
- Maintain volunteer spaces within the shelter with information and supplies.
- Ability to perform accurate data entry and work with volunteer management software.
- Availability to work weekends regularly, evenings, and holidays as needed.
- Minimum one year of experience working with youth or adults in a volunteer or similar environment.
- Leadership through influence, rapport building, and collaboration; ability to recognize different perspectives and identify solutions that meet stakeholders.
- Independent thinking, confident decision‑making, and agile response to changing circumstances.
- Sound judgment and professional demeanor during all interactions with public, partners, donors, staff, and volunteers.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; communicate with diverse populations in respectful and professional manner.
- Comfortable with regular weekend and evening work.
Physical Requirements
- Work in office and medical center/animal shelter environment; travel between two campuses may be required.
- Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.; pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs.; moving items above shoulder; use of hands/arms at or above shoulder; prolonged standing/sitting/stooping; occasional climbing/bending.
- Must be able to lift, move, restrain, guide, or manage an animal up to 150 lbs. on a leash occasionally.
- Must be able to remain stationary for prolonged periods.
- Noise exposure includes barking and other animal vocalizations.
- May involve contact with angry or emotional people and possible animal‑related injuries.
