We are recruiting 4 Seasonal Wildland Fire Suppression Specialists for full‑time seasonal positions located at the Rees Training Center in Hermiston, Oregon. This announcement will open continuously until all positions are filled. The first candidate list will be pulled February 20, 2026, and may close any time after this date.
These positions are represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ (AFSCME) union.

What You Will Be DoingPerform a wide variety of manual tasks in the areas of wildland fire prevention, pre‑suppression, and fire suppression. Serve as a member or engineer operator for an engine or on a hand crew. Maintain engine/crew readiness of an assigned crew. Coordinate and/or perform physical labor necessary to suppress and extinguish wildfire. Duties include detection, pre‑suppression, prevention, and suppression. Also complete routine building and ground maintenance.
WorkingConditions
Employee is expected to work in a safe and efficient manner and report to work for scheduled shifts with all personal protective equipment (PPE). Required to drive wildland fire engines, obey traffic laws, and travel on steep narrow forest roads. Required to work various shifts including holidays, nights, weekends, and long hours on short notice. Assignments to emergency incidents may require employee to be away from duty station for up to 21 days.
Frequently work under adverse conditions such as noise, smoke, heat, rough terrain, dust, inclement weather, and exposure to poison oak, bees, and poisonous snakes. Requires occasional exposure to heavy equipment operations, aircraft, hazards of burning and/or falling material, and chemical and biological pesticides.
- Two (2) seasons of Wildland firefighting experience.
- Must take and pass the Physical Fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2).
- Must provide master record or red card upon request.
- Incident Commander Type V.
- Single Resource (ENGB).
- Maintain a favorable criminal background check.
- Maintain a drug/alcohol free workplace in accordance with OMD Drug/Alcohol CPM’s, Policies, and the Statewide Drug Free Workplace Policy 50-000-01.
