Job DescriptionThe Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has a full-time opportunity for a Remedial Action Hydrogeologist in Portland, Oregon. The position supports site investigation, feasibility study, design, construction, and operation phases of cleanup at hazardous substance cleanup sites, providing hydrogeological technical expertise for groundwater and subsurface investigations and cleanup.
What you will doYou will serve as a Project Manager during the site investigation, feasibility study, design, construction, and operation phases of cleanup at hazardous substance cleanup sites. You will provide hydrogeological technical expertise and assistance for groundwater and subsurface investigations and cleanup at sites with hazardous substances.

What are we looking for?Minimum Qualifications for Natural Resource Specialist 4 – Hydrogeologist:
- 7 years of experience in a natural resource or environmental field
- At least 1 year of experience at a technical or professional level performing activities in a natural resource program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities
- Current registration as an Oregon Professional Geologist
Minimum Qualifications for Natural Resource Specialist 4 – Underfill:
- 7 years of experience in a natural resource or environmental field
- At least 1 year of experience at a technical or professional level performing activities in a natural resource program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities
Substitutions:
- Bachelor’s degree in physical science, environmental science, natural resources, or a closely related field may substitute for 3 of the required years of experience.
- Master’s degree in physical science, environmental science, natural resources, or a closely related field may substitute for 4 of the required years of experience.
- Doctorate degree in physical science, environmental science, natural resources, or a closely related field may substitute for 5 of the required years of experience.
Notes on underfill:
The underfill option is available if minimum qualifications are not met retain this appointment, you must meet the minimum qualifications for the Natural Resource Specialist 4 – Hydrogeologist within 3 years by obtaining Oregon geologist registration.
Candidates who are most competitive will also reflect the following desired attributes:
- Understanding of environmental justice and the historical impacts on marginalized communities; commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Expert-level experience in hydrogeology, contaminant fate and transport, site characterization, groundwater monitoring, and corrective action for contamination problems.
- Strong project management, analytical, and organizational skills; experience leading environmental investigations and cleanups.
- Ability to lead remedial action projects and manage all phases of investigations and cleanups of sites contaminated with hazardous substances.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, GIS concepts, groundwater modeling, data management, and statistics.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for diverse audiences, including reporting and presenting analyses and recommendations.
