Overview

Wages

Trainee Pay Rate $31.40 – $37.87 (hourly, negotiable);
Certified Pay Rate $34.48 – $46.16 (hourly, negotiable).

Pay incentives include:

Typical Duties
  • Maintain security, sanitation, health, and medical standards by supervising adults in custody (AICs).
  • Ensure due process rights of AICs in disciplinary matters and that AIC rights to the legal system are maintained.
  • Ensure AICs have access to materials, services and privileges according to the law.
  • Adhere to, implement, and enforce job‑related rules, policies, procedures, and post orders in a manner that promotes the safe, secure, and orderly operation of the facility.
  • Attend and participate in facility and unit briefings, meetings, and training.
  • Initiate and maintain neat, accurate, and complete reports, memos, disciplinary reports, logbooks, and unit rosters.
  • Work in a 24‑hour, seven‑day a week facility which may require working day, swing, night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Remain constantly alert and observant throughout the shift.
  • Control access to and egress from the facility.
  • Conduct visual AIC welfare checks and counts, equipment and facility structural inspections.
  • Conduct tactile‑clothed and visual‑unclothed searches of AICs to discover contraband and to ensure AIC welfare while incarcerated.
  • Conduct area searches to detect contraband or deficiencies in the security systems or physical structure of the facility.
  • Transport and escort AICs inside and outside the facility.
  • Respond to and assist other staff in managing a variety of emergency situations.
  • Use approved facility restraints in the control of AICs.
  • Operate firefighting equipment in the suppression of institutional fires.
  • Maintain and use firearms.
  • Monitor audio traffic on radios, telephones, and intercommunication systems, and act as the central dispatch for the entire facility in routine and emergency situations.
  • Control, issue, and record issuance of keys and radios.
  • Monitor auditory and visual emergency alarm systems.
  • Coordinate directly with the incident commander during emergency situations.
  • Use audiovisual surveillance equipment to monitor movement in the hallways of the facility.
  • Verbally provide instructions and orders to adults in custody over the intercom for the safe, secure, and orderly operation of the facility.
Requirements
  • State Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements:
    • United States Citizen within one year of employment.
    • At least 21 years of age at the time of employment (age 20 considered if 21 by 90 days from close date).
    • Physically able to perform the duties required.
    • Good moral fitness; no convictions of moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or drug/sex crimes.
    • Comply with Oregon law enforcement physical requirements (section 259‑008‑0010 OAR).
  • Marion County Requirements:
    • Possess a valid Oregon driver’s license or obtain within 30 days of hire.
    • Subject to an extensive background investigation.
    • Pass a psychological and physical exam.
    • Ability to hold, aim, and discharge a firearm with sufficient accuracy.
    • Complete Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) within the first year.
    • Pass a pre‑employment drug screen (including marijuana).
    • Work rotating shifts, split shifts, or other alternate schedules.
  • Additional Requirements for Certified Level:
    • Meets trainee requirements and has 18 months of experience as a corrections officer or deputy, or a satisfactory combination of work, education, or training.
    • Possess Basic Corrections Officer certification from DPSST; out‑of‑state holders must pass DPSST Career Officer Development Course within one year of hire.
