Responsibilities
- Assign, monitor, evaluate, and assess training needs of subordinate staff.
- Participate in screening and background checks of new hires, and make hiring recommendations.
- Conduct orientation of new hires.
- Resolve personnel issues and grievances.
- Participate in disciplinary investigations and recommend appropriate actions.
- Provide counseling on professional growth and career development.
- Review and investigate reports of security, safety, and sanitation infractions.
- Review, endorse, and ensure corrective action for misconduct and unusual incident reports prepared by subordinates.
- Authorize and terminate visitor accesses.
- Make independent decisions to remove inmates to special housing units or return them to parent institution for major infractions or protection needs.
- Supervise and inspect dining rooms, infirmaries, clinics, housing units, and segregation units.
- Authorize changes in institution routing when required by operational necessity.
- Serve as commander in emergency situations until relieved by superiors.
- Initiate emergency actions, deploy staff, and notify designated personnel during inmate disturbances, escapes, or criminal activity.
- Secure and maintain chain of evidence in criminal activity events.
- Current permanent employee of the Oregon Department of Corrections or Oregon Corrections Enterprise (not temporary or contract staff).
- Three (3) years of experience in a correctional-security setting with primary duties involving care and custody of AICs.
- At least one (1) year of experience at the Sergeant level or equivalent within a correctional system.
- Ability to obtain, within one year, an Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Correctional Certificate, or a Correctional Certificate from another government agency. Education cannot substitute for required experience.
- Eligible to obtain a valid DPSST Correctional Certificate if not yet certified.
- Desirable: possession of a valid DPSST Advanced Correctional Certificate.
- Must pass a CJIS fingerprint‑based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Some felony convictions may disqualify.
Salary range: $6,834 - $9,143. PERS qualifying applicants may receive an adjusted range.
