Job Summary

The City of Salem Police Department is hiring for a Police Officer – Out-of-State Lateral. If you are currently or have been a Police Officer outside Oregon in the past 12 months and were employed for more than 3 years, we encourage you to apply.

Salary and Incentives

Salary is based on steps and incentives as follows:

  • Step 1 – $39.11/hr ($6,779.07/mo)
  • Step 2 – $41.07/hr ($7,118.80/mo)
  • Step 3 – $43.12/hr ($7,474.13/mo)
  • Step 4 – $45.28/hr ($7,848.53/mo)
  • Step 5 – $47.54/hr ($8,240.27/mo)
  • Step 6 – $49.92/hr ($8,652.80/mo) (up to $51.42/hr)
  • Monthly Rate for Step 1‑Step 6 ranges from $6,779.07 to $8,652.80 plus final step to $8,912.80.
  • Incentives:
    • Certifications, Training and College

      Incentives:

      2% – 10%
    • Extra Duty/Specialized Assignment Incentive: 2.5% – 5%
    • Bi‑Linguistic Incentive: 5%

What You Will Do
  • Patrol assigned areas to enforce laws and ordinances.
  • Answer and investigate citizen complaints and reports.
  • Examine crime or accident scenes and preserve evidence as needed.
  • Meet with the public, attend community meetings, and present information to keep houses and people safe.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduate or GED and a minimum of a Basic Police Certification issued by the Oregon DPSST or an out‑of‑state equivalent.
  • Currently or formerly employed as a police officer within the past 12 months with a minimum of three years of full‑time experience (jail and most federal law‑enforcement experience do not count).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Oregon class C driver’s license or an equivalent and a driving record that meets city standards.
  • Ability to work periodic overtime and various 24‑hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends.
  • At least 21 years old at the date of hire.
  • U.S. citizen or ability to become a citizen within 18 months.
  • Eligible to participate in competitive testing, including physical fitness, reading comprehension, writing, and psychological examinations, and able to pass a strict background investigation.
  • Must pass the pre‑employment drug test (including marijuana) and background check.
