This position is a Maintenance Mechanic located at an Indian Health Service health care facility or hospital. The role is performed under the Federal Wage System with a job grade of WG‑08.
Responsibilities- Follow oral or written instructions and/or work orders to perform maintenance mechanic duties.
- Apply standard building techniques, practices, and codes, read and understand blueprints, sketches, schematics, and work orders.
- Use and maintain pneumatic hand tools, shop tools, drill press, band saw, table saw, and other power tools.
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions for the operation of power tools and safety manuals for all equipment and materials.
- Adhere to safety guidelines when working with oils and lubricants during maintenance tasks.
- Respond to frequent changes in instructions with respect to team, project, and/or task requirements.
- Maintain a preventive maintenance schedule and complete records of all work performed.
- Operate government‑owned vehicles and maintenance equipment as required.
Work is performed both inside and outside the facility. The environment may involve sudden temperature changes, working on equipment such as walk‑in freezer units, and performing repairs in adverse weather or noisy, dirty, and dusty areas. The position may require the use of ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and exposure to hazardous chemicals such as refrigerant gases.
Physical EffortsThe role requires handling and carrying tools, equipment, and testing devices that rarely exceed 50 pounds. Duty involves reaching equipment from the floor or using ladders, occasionally stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and working in uncomfortable positions for extended periods.
Screen‑Out ElementsAbility to perform the duties of a Maintenance Mechanic with less than normal supervision. Time‑In‑Grade requirements apply; merit promotion candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level.
