- Relief staff work a variety of shifts and days to cover pre‑scheduled vacations and holidays, as well as provide coverage for sick calls and additional staff needs. Relief staff are also required to attend mandatory annual trainings and scheduled meetings.
- There are no guaranteed hours, but relief can work up to 1,040 hours per fiscal year.

The detention center provides a safe and secure environment for the temporary custody of delinquent youth. Youth receive education, counseling, medical services, physical education and recreation, and cognitive and skill development programs.
Typical Duties- Provides orientation for incoming youth and assists them in making the initial adjustment to the facility or program; provides ongoing direction to youth; acts as a positive role model; attends to daily needs.
- Prepares paperwork required by policy for juvenile offenders; supervises and writes evaluations of individual juvenile's behavior and performance; writes behavior/incident reports as required.
- Assists in the intake process; may conduct pat and strip searches; assesses need for medical attention; secures personal effects, currency, contraband and issues receipt.
- Maintains order and respect for authority; observes hostile behavior and takes preventative action.
- Responds to emergency situations and diffuses aggressive situations; handles discipline problems using correction techniques and disciplinary controls.
- Ensures safety, reports malfunctioning equipment, cleans facilities, performs minor maintenance.
- Facilitates education and skills building activities individually and in groups; leads recreational activities; performs cleaning and maintenance.
- Works a variety of hours on a variable schedule; remains alert and punctual.
- Maintains security of the facility; conducts inspections, checks, searches; follows policies; supervises visitors.
- Provides information on individual youth to probation staff, caseworkers or medical personnel; maintains confidentiality.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with coworkers, clients, families, and the public.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two (2) years of college coursework in Juvenile Justice, Sociology, Psychology or a related field; or
- Two (2) years of experience working with juveniles or at‑risk youth; or
- Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to the position.
- Pass a criminal history background check, including fingerprinting; convictions do not necessarily disqualify.
- Pass a pre‑employment drug screen, including marijuana testing. Refer to the Marion County Drug and Alcohol Use and Testing Policy.
- May be required to pass a pre‑employment psychological examination.
- Position is part‑time, temporary/on‑call relief eligible for overtime.
- Position is not represented by a union.
- Works in a 24‑hour, 7‑day operation with rotating shift schedules including day, swing, weekend, holiday, and overtime as required.
• Knowledge of juvenile behavior and correction techniques; security procedures and first aid; juvenile laws in Oregon.
• Ability to communicate effectively with juveniles, coworkers, and supervisors in oral and written forms.
• Ability to keep accurate records; develop working relationships with agencies, coworkers, and the public.
• Ability to make sound judgment; work a flexible schedule.
