Psychiatrist (Salem/Wilsonville)
Department of Corrections, Oregon State Penitentiary – Salem, Oregon, and Coffee Creek Correctional Facility – Wilsonville, Oregon. This position requires on-site/in‑person work, with a hybrid schedule possible.
Responsibilities- Provide psychiatric assessment and psychotropic medication management services to adults in correctional custody, as clinically indicated.
- Coordinate care with QMHPs, nurse practitioners, other physicians, and refer patients to appropriate programs.
- Perform psychiatric assessments through interviews, review of prior records, laboratory and imaging results, and medical history.
- Prescribe and manage psychotropic medication, including obtaining formulary approval and prior approvals for non‑formulary medication.
- Organize and conduct laboratory and imaging studies, schedule follow‑ups, and provide consultation to general medical providers.
- Complete clinical documentation using SOAP format, obtain informed consent, and respond to offender communications.
- Assist with release planning to ensure medication continuity and coordinate community referrals as needed.
- Prepare reports and serve as expert witness or witness of fact when required.
- Medical degree (M.D. or D.O.) with completed approved psychiatric residency.
- Board‑eligible or board‑certified in general adult psychiatry.
- Licensed to practice medicine in Oregon without restrictions.
- Valid individual federal DEA certification and up‑to‑date CPR certification.
- Legal ability to work in the United States.
- Ability to work with aggressive or combative patients and communicate effectively with all stakeholders.
- Diagnostic and treatment knowledge of mental disorders, drug interactions, and preventive health care.
- Principles and practice of medicine, human anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology, nutrition, pharmacology.
- Human behavior and growth.
- Community resources for patient referral.
- Proficiency in treating mood, anxiety, substance use, persistent mental illness, and survivors of sexual assault.
- Use of therapeutic instruments and administration of psychotropic medications.
- Conduct psychiatric assessments including mental status exams and laboratory analysis.
- Develop and modify treatment plans with follow‑up parameters.
- Critical thinking and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions.
- Clinical work with aggressive, abusive, or combative patients.
- Oral and written communication with healthcare professionals and laypersons.
