Position: Roseburg High School to Highway Trainee (Striping)

Job Overview

This one year training program is for recent or soon‑to‑be high school graduates and alternative school graduates. Trainees learn about state government, highway maintenance and construction work. You will work with a maintenance crew to repair and maintain roads, bridges, signs and facilities to keep Oregon’s roads safe.

  • Salary: $3,952 per month starting, increasing to $4,124 per month after six months.
  • After completion, you may qualify for a Transportation Maintenance Specialist 2 position (currently $4,312 – $5,988 per month).
  • Trainees are encouraged to apply for permanent ODOT jobs at any time.
A Day In The Life (Responsibilities)
  • Perform manual labor to repair roadway surfaces and shoulders.
  • Complete weather‑related operations including snow removal, de‑icing and sanding.
  • Set up traffic control after crashes or other emergencies.
  • Maintain drainage systems, clean ditches and repair culverts.
  • Clear brush, mow grass and spray roadside vegetation.
  • Repair guardrails, milepost markers and fences.
  • Service and repair tools and motorized equipment.
  • Work in other specialties such as bridge, sign or landscape maintenance, and striping and traffic line operations.
  • Exposure to noise, extreme heights, heavy equipment, pesticides and hazardous waste materials is expected.
  • Must navigate rough terrain, uneven slopes, weather conditions and lift up to 100 pounds.
  • May need to be available after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency and weather related purposes.

Eligibility Criteria

Must obtain high school diploma or GED between January 1, 2023, and July 1, 2026. Candidates who previously completed the ODOT High School to Highway program are not eligible.

Special Qualifications
  • Maximum 30‑minute response time to emergency call‑outs at 3339 Old Highway 99 South, Roseburg, OR 97471.
  • Use a commercial motor vehicle for business.
  • Must obtain a Class A Commercial Learner Permit within 60 days and a CDL‑A with tanker endorsement, no air brakes, no 5th wheel, no manual transmission restrictions within six months (training costs covered). Alternatively, must already hold a valid CDL‑A with required endorsements at hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using tools or equipment (e.g., farming or landscaping)
  • Experience working on a team
  • Experience following directions
