Seasonal Maintenance Worker – PW Road Operations
Marion County Public Works is seeking enthusiastic, safety‑minded and team‑oriented individuals to join our Road & Bridge Operations Division this summer. As a Seasonal Maintenance Worker, you will join our collaborative team and participate in a variety of tasks necessary for the operation and maintenance of roadway features within the Marion County community, including pavement/drainage, bridges/guardrail, signs/pavement markings, roadside vegetation, litter control and high wind/storm response efforts.
These positions require being 18 years of age or older, possession of a high school diploma (or equivalent) and a demonstrated safe driving record of two years or more. All required safety equipment and training necessary for a safe and successful experience are provided by the department at no cost.
General Statement of DutiesResponsible for various manual labor tasks within the Public Works Department including roads, bridges, vegetation, sign, pavement markings, traffic devices and control, ferries, fleet, drainage conveyance, nuisance control, working with adult‑in‑custody work crews, park maintenance, environmental sites, landfill and transfer site operations.
SupervisionWork under direct supervision of a supervisor, crew leader or lead worker who assigns work and observes performance to ensure conformance to department standards. May work independently for limited durations and/or on routine tasks at the discretion of a direct supervisor.
Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification, but employees may aid in the instruction of peer employees.
Responsibilities- Control or direct traffic around hazards or crews; set up, move, and maintain signs, cones, and barricades, portable devices for work or hazard zones; turn high water signs; operate pilot and tail vehicles.
- Dig ditches, shovel, install and maintain culverts, cut and chip brush, litter pick‑up/nuisance control removal; clean and maintain shops, grounds, vehicles, and equipment.
- Shovel and rake hot mix asphalt or cold mix; apply tack oil; prepare and apply crack sealant.
- Stand for long periods of time; walk long distances; work in inclement weather conditions; perform heavy manual labor; load/unload all types of heavy materials; work with Corrections workers.
- Aid in storms response and recovery including ice, snow control, flooding, high water, and wind damage.
- Operate potential equipment such as light trucks, compactors, ATVs, asphalt tacker, crack sealer, skid steer, forklift, cement mixer, etc.
- Communicate adequately and access information via computer (e.g., email).
- Participate in chemical hazard clean‑ups and basic incident command training; assist in Emergency Management duties, which may require long hours, weekend/holiday work, or little advance notice.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
New employees start at Step 1 of the pay scale ($20.58). Returning employees may be eligible for higher steps based on previous seasons worked, up to Step 3.
Special Requirements- Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants and review it in accordance with county policy.
- This is a Safety Sensitive/Special Needs position. Must pass a post‑offer drug screen, including testing for marijuana.
- Finalists may be required to pass a physical examination which includes agility evaluation by a county‑appointed medical doctor.
