Bridge Maintenance Specialist – Oregon Department of Transportation

The RoleApply your skills to keep Oregon’s roads and travelers safe. As part of the Albany bridge maintenance crew, you will operate equipment needed to maintain and repair roadways, highways, bridges, and structures. Dependable, growth‑oriented candidates are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities- Work through all phases of bridge maintenance.
- Set up and tear down traffic control operations, and control or flag the traveling public and work crews.
- Operate a wide variety of light and heavy equipment.
- Keep roads and facilities safe by completing weather‑related operations, including snow removal, plowing, de‑icing, and sanding.
- Maintain drainage systems, dig and clean ditches, and repair culverts, inlets, and erosion.
- Repair guardrails, barriers, milepost markers, delineators, and fences.
- Perform minor service and repair of equipment, tools, and motorized equipment.
- Perform manual labor to repair roadway surfaces and shoulders.
- Construct and place rigging and scaffolding for fixed, hanging, swing, and traveling scaffolding.
- Work under exposure to noise, extreme heights, all weather conditions, heavy equipment, pesticides, and hazardous waste materials.
- Move around rough terrain, bend and stoop for extended periods, and possibly lift up to 60 pounds.
- May be required after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency, on‑call, and weather‑related purposes.
- One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work;
- OR two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training.
- Position requires a maximum 45‑minute response time to 1100 Goldfish Farm Rd SE, Albany, OR 97322 for emergency call‑outs.
- Must possess a current, valid commercial driver's license A (CDL‑A) with a tanker endorsement, no air‑brake restrictions, no 5th wheel restrictions, and no manual‑transmission restrictions; OR have the ability to acquire a class A commercial learner permit within 60 days of hire and a CDL‑A with a tanker endorsement and restrictions removed within six months of hire. ODOT will cover training costs.
We’d Like To See
- Experience in road maintenance, construction, or in a maintenance training program such as ODOT High School to Highway program, ODOT/ODF Fire and Ice program, Job Corps, etc.
- Ability to maintain effectiveness in varying environments with changing priorities, responsibilities, tasks, or people.
- Experience working safely in conditions that may be unsafe or hazardous.
- A current, valid commercial driver’s license A (CDL‑A) is preferred.
- Work/life balance with 11 paid holidays a year, flexible work schedules, and paid leave.
- Comprehensive and equitable base salary within the listed range ($4,312 – $5,988), adjusted by an equal pay assessment. PERS members or those who become eligible will receive a 6.95% increase.
