Job DescriptionSalem City Schools is searching for qualified applicants for the position of Health Sciences Teacher for the 2026–2027 school year.

General Definition and Conditions of WorkThe role performs difficult professional work providing teaching services in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects, assisting students to develop knowledge as a foundation for future learning in accordance with each student’s ability, motivating students to develop skill in assigned subject matters; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the school principal. This is an exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Employees holding exempt positions often are required to follow a flexible work schedule, which may include working extended hours to meet specific job responsibilities. The contracted salary covers all hours worked.
- Establish a flexible school instructional program and class environment favorable to learning; teach a broad range of subjects or specialized subject matter(s), motivating students to achieve maximum potential.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials.
- Translate lesson plans into learning experiences.
- Integrate subject area content and technology.
- Instruct students in subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Establish and maintain standards of behavior.
- Adapt teaching materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students.
- Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions.
- Encourage students to think independently, develop and express original ideas.
- Evaluate students’ progress, maintain appropriate records, prepare progress reports.
- Communicate with students, student counselors and parents through conferences and other means.
- Maintain professional competence through in‑service education and self‑selected professional books and instructional materials.
- Select and requisition books and instructional materials.
- Participate in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required.
- Attend Parent–Teacher Association meetings.
- Identify student needs; assist with assessment of needs.
- Administer group standardized tests in accordance with established procedures.
- Perform related tasks as required.
Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, students and parents;
ability to operate a personal computer.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university holding an appropriate Virginia teaching license.
