The Position
The Spanish Program at Roanoke College seeks adjunct instructors to teach Elementary and Intermediate Spanish (SPAN 102 and SPAN 201) for the academic year. An M.A. in Spanish or related field is required, with prior teaching experience preferred.

Position SummaryThis part‑time, semester‑based role focuses on teaching excellence, student engagement, and maintaining academic standards. The ideal candidate brings strong subject‑matter expertise, effective communication skills, and a commitment to supporting diverse learners.
Key Responsibilities- Facilitate student learning, provide effective instruction, and perform evaluations of student learning for all assigned classes, using each course's standard course outline as a guide.
- Develop course curriculum, course handouts, lectures, labs, and presentations.
- Participate in program level learning assessment. Participation includes helping articulate learning outcomes, choosing and administering measures, evaluating student performance, and suggesting changes to improve student learning.
- Schedule, supervise, debrief, and evaluate students in clinical, internship, observation, field experience, and similar settings as appropriate for the course or program.
- Be available in person and electronically to students to provide sufficient support to supplement and enhance their academic experience.
- Assign grades and maintain course/student records in accordance with FERPA and college regulations and submit grades and records by established deadlines.
- Meet all classes and other scheduled responsibilities such as office hours and meetings at the designated times.
- Keep a flexible weekly schedule that best facilitates student learning and access. Any changes in the scheduled class times or locations should have prior approval by the department chair.
- Remain current in academic or program discipline, including attending professional conferences, and maintaining licensure, certification, or continuing education requirements where appropriate.
- Receive training or stay current in technological or pedagogical advances that promote student learning.
- Perform other academically related duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree or higher in field of instruction.
- Recognize and assist students needing remediation or other intervention for academic success and retention.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and stakeholders from across the College and the community in order to create, preserve, and enhance important partnerships, as well as within one’s own department.
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills; ability to use the faculty handbook and college policies to make informed decisions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Treat all members of the college community with dignity and respect demonstrating professional, courteous behavior and engage in constructive conflict resolution, when needed.
